Villa VICUS is a single-storey family house located on a sloping site below Zobor Hill in Nitra, at the end of a quiet street with forest rising above the plot and open southern views towards the city, Calvary Hill and Nitra Castle. The design grew from a simple request: to create a house that would open the view from every living space while supporting the natural rhythm of everyday family life.

The architectural concept is based on a linear single-storey layout stretched along the southern façade and unified by a continuous timber pergola. This pergola is not an added feature, but the project’s principal compositional and climatic device.

It defines the terraces, creates protected outdoor living areas, shades the glazed façade and visually extends the interior into the landscape.

With a usable floor area of 158 m², the house includes an elevated living room with kitchen and dining area, a main bedroom, two children’s rooms, two bathrooms and technical facilities. Service spaces are concentrated along the northern edge of the plan, while the living areas open towards the south.

A summer kitchen on the northern side and long visual connections running through the house further strengthen both its spatial continuity and its relationship to the site.

The house is designed around a passive climatic principle: in winter it benefits from solar gains through the southern glazing, while in summer the pergola provides effective natural shading. This approach is reinforced by a consistent material language that shapes both the atmosphere and the legibility of the architecture.

Travertine flooring extends from the interior onto the terrace, while clay plaster and exposed timber beams give the interior a calm, tactile character. The material palette is intentionally restrained, rooted in naturalness, durability and the ability to age well over time.

Villa VICUS is built on precise spatial logic, an appropriate scale and a restrained architectural language. Rather than relying on expressive gestures, it seeks to offer a cultivated and enduring quality of living, where view, layout, shading and material come together as one coherent whole.
