If you enjoy historic architecture the city will be very attractive, in fact it has been really successful at retaining its patina – both the historic streets and spaces of the four old quarters but also the texture of the stone paving and building facades. Essentially it is a well preserved ancient city, once part of the Roman Empire.
There is not much contemporary architecture on the island but buildings of note are an intervention in Palermo by Carlo Scarpa, Palermo’s department store and a massive modern church building in Siracusa. Compared to major Italian cities such as Rome or Venice the capital city of Sicily is much less touristy, for us that was mostly an advantage but might not be to everyone’s taste.
