The owners sought a Japanese teahouse influence, owing to his heritage and their shared appreciation for the tranquility of those designs. Functional requirements included a bath/changing room, storage room, outdoor wet bar and covered sitting area, plus renovation of the existing pool and terrace.

The existing modern, cubist house (designed by the same architect) would view the pool pavilion from a slight distance above. The scheme interprets the sliding rice paper door element of the teahouse with two steel-framed fiberglass panels to provide the same translucence on an expanded scale, pushing/pulling the panels apart to create a screened view of the bath and storage structure and a backdrop to the bar/dining pavilion. The entire structure creates a lantern of light in the evening.

Push Pull Pool Pavilion: This pavilion for entertaining and changing was added in 2007 to our 1999 home design. The wall and roof planes have been pushed/pulled apart and made translucent to create a sense of air and light.
