DUNDEE BUILDING WINS COLOUR COATED CREATIVITY AWARD 2004
The NCR FSG Discovery Centre Research and Development Facility in Fulton Road, Dundee has won the Colour Coated Creativity Award 2004. The Angus-based designers of the winning building, James F Stephen Architects & Interior Designers, will be presented with the award on 17 June outside the Discovery Centre, Dundee.
The Colour Coated Creativity Award, sponsored by Highland Colour Coaters, was established in 2003 to find the best use of powder coating in Scotland. The Discovery Centre, completed in November 2001, acts as the international headquarters of NCR’s self-service business solutions division. James F Stephen, Architects designed the facility as a “gateway” site, maximising the dramatic views over the Tay and Fife.
The powder colour coating used on the aluminium curtain walling, framing, roof flashings, and soffet sheets was selected for performance reasons as well as aesthetic value. The Discovery Centre is sited in a very exposed area and the powder coating has proven to be very effective in defence against the Scottish climate. The powder coating provides a crisp and sleek finish to the building and allows a contrast to exist between the lightness of the glazing and the solidarity of the building’s form.
Geoff Crowley, Managing Director of Highland Colour Coaters, sponsors of the award, said: ‘Powder coating is an environmentally friendly, sustainable way to bring colour into our built environment, and this building does just that. James F Stephen Architects have specified modern long lasting coatings to protect this building, while enhancing its looks at the same time. They have designed in corrosion protection and beauty simultaneously.’
Douglas Reid, partner of James F Stephen Architects stated: “The powder coated curtain walling & roof components play a very significant role in the articulation of the facade and the robustness of appearance, desired as part of the overall aesthetic quality.”
