In 1988, The Seamen’s Church Institute, an ecumenical organization founded in 1834 to provide for the well-being of merchant mariners, purchased a site on the northern edge of New York City’s South Street Seaport Historic District.
The pavilion is prototypical architecture, drawing from the multidisciplinary source of product design- urban planning-architecture and naval design. The pavilion is resolved as a vessel – a floating exhibition space that can be sailed to other cities.
