New York Center for Architecture Talk

Belonging Together : lecture by world-renowned Finnish architect Juha Leiviskä

When: 7 Jan, 2009
Where: Center for Architecture, 536 LaGuardia Place, New York
Invite: required
Organizer: AIA New York Chapter and Consulate General of Finland

Juha Leiviskä is one of Finland’s most respected architects and his widely-published works helped cement modern Finnish design’s reputation for meticulous craftsmanship, spatial invention and material expression. Although Leiviskä has designed a wide variety of buildings and urban plans, he is best known for his remarkable churches.

Leiviskä’s distinctive, abstract compositions contain unmistakably sacred spaces in which light and color invoke the divine. He employs musical metaphors for his work and refers to his interiors as “instruments played by light.”

Beyond their numinous effects, his buildings are also carefully conceived as social environments where life and community are encouraged and expressed. Leiviskä has lectured in countries around the world and was made an honorary fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 1994.

He was awarded the Carlsberg Prize for architecture in 1995 and two years later became the architecture member of the Academy of Finland. He is a Commander of the Order of the Lion of Finland and in 2008 he was awarded the Antonio Feltrinelli International Prize for Architecture and Town Planning. Now in practice for over forty years, Leiviskä maintains an office with architect Vilhelm Helander.

About AIA New York Chapter
The AIA New York Chapter is the oldest and largest chapter of the American Institute of Architects. We are dedicated to three goals: design excellence, public outreach, and professional development. The Chapter’s members include more than 4,000 practicing architects, allied professionals, students, and public members interested in architecture and design.

To fulfill its mission, the Chapter sponsors an array of programs, usually held at the Center for Architecture, that explore the role of architects in housing, planning, historic preservation, and urban design among other topics, as well as our annual Design Awards Program for architecture, interior architecture and unrealized projects. In addition, the Chapter publishes a magazine, OCULUS, coordinates 24 committees and works with its charitable affiliate the Center for Architecture Foundation to provide scholarship and educational opportunities for students and the general public.
