DawnTown Architecture Competition to Announce Winners
During Art Basel Miami Beach
Innovative Designs Received from Around the World
Keynote Speaker Adriaan Geuze, World-Famous Landscape Architect
MIAMI – DawnTown, the annual international architectural competition for downtown Miami, is set to turn all high-aesthetic-seeking eyes in town for the famed Art Basel week to the downtown area, with the award ceremony breakfast set for Friday, December 4th from 8.30 – 10 a.m. at Marquis, the 67-story luxury condo and hotel tower located across the street from the competition site, at 1100 Biscayne Boulevard.
This year’s competition seeks creative architectural ideas for a new station for the Metromover, Downtown Miami’s elevated public transportation system. The ceremony will feature the winning designs announced by members of the jury, followed by a keynote speech by Adriaan Geuze, world-famous landscape architect and founder of West 8, which designed Governor’s Island in New York City, Toronto’s Central Waterfront, and the Parque Lineal del Rio Manzaneres in Madrid.

“I am excited to see the results of the competition and contribute to Miami’s ongoing dialogue about innovative architecture,” said Mr. Geuze, whose firm was recently hired to design a park next to the New World Symphony’s new campus in Miami Beach. “Miami architecture embodies the shock of the new, but a common thread is Miami’s unique connection with its landscape and natural features.”
Internatinally acclaimed architect of Marquis (his latest landmark design on the Miami skyline), Bernardo Fort-Brescia, will also speak at the awards ceremony in regards to how he has been a witness to and leader in seeing the city and its landscape change, most recently with a dynamic growth downtown.
Also on hand will be the jury of the competition, including:

– Luis Revuelta, architect
– Terry Riley, architect
– Mera Rubell of the Rubell Family Collection
– Dennis Scholl, program director of the Knight Foundation
– Gillian Thomas, president of the Miami Science Museum
Mayor of Miami Manny Diaz emphasized that “DawnTown is the direct result of the downtown Miami community’s commitment to improving urban design and the richness of our downtown life, and every year the DawnTown award ceremony is a celebration of the strides we have made and the new ideas, from Miami and around the world, that inspire us to move forward.”
DawnTown 2008: Waterworks drew more than 100 entries from South Korea to Finland, and was won by Helen Pierce of San Antonio, Texas, with runners up Mikkel Thisted of Denmark and Bryan and Sarah Astheimer of London.
DawnTown was created by Kai van Hasselt and Andrew Frey, who now serves as the Executive Director in addition to being a urban planning attorney at Akerman Senterfitt. “DawnTown is part of an emerging trend to use open-source architecture competitions to solve design problems and improve people’s lives,” according to Frey. “What is unique about DawnTown is how it draws on downtown Miami’s rich and evolving urban context, the perfect backdrop for the creativity of the entries.”
DawnTown 2009: Metromover is sponsored by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, DWNTWN/Miami DDA, Marquis, and Akerman Senterfitt. The competition is produced in partnership with the University of Miami, Florida International University, Miami-Dade College schools of architecture, Design & Architecture Senior High, the Miami Art Museum, and the City of Miami. Prizes are $8,000, $4,000, and $2,000.
