Luxury Residence in Santa Monica

The challenge was to adapt an outdated, poorly sculpted, sprawling structure into a larger more integrated architectural expression that embraced the expanded property and graceful surroundings. The strategy was to update the building’s material palette and expand the square footage and spaciousness of the existing residence by designing a kinetic series of connected spaces. Generous amounts of light and spatial complexity were added to the home. The entire property was redeveloped to utilize open patio areas and spacious gardens. Sustainable features include solar panels used to heat the swimming pool and photo voltaic panels to provide for electrical supply with a battery backup system.

The architecture was utilized to create dramatic and contrasting effects. The recreation room ceiling bows as if a canvas is draped above, skylights are deep and though the living room fireplace is exaggerated to give presence, the hearth is surrounded by unpretentious furniture for comfortable gatherings. The new floating steel staircase with wood treads leads from the kitchen and recreation room up to the private bedrooms. The bedrooms, though private, have an open atmosphere and are filled with natural light.

The building’s exterior has an elaborate volumetric and geometric presence and is wrapped in domestic cedar boards and clad with Swisspearl cement composite panels. A secluded setting is accomplished through landscaping and an animated architectural configuration meant to connect both inside to out and the highly refined to the organic.
