Designed by Grimshaw and Partners, it was one of the highest profile buildings in the world at the time of its completion in 1993, winning a number of prestigious awards including the RIBA President’s Building of the Year (to become the Stirling Prize a year later) and the Mies van der Rohe Award for European Architecture.

Liverpool Street Station redevelopment, Bishopsgate, City of London
Dates built: 1985-91
Design: British Rail – Architecture & Design Group
The station opened in 1874, as a replacement for Bishopsgate station as the Great Eastern Railway’s main London terminus. By 1895, it had the most platforms of any London terminal station.

In 1991, an additional entrance was constructed on the east side of Bishopsgate with a subway under the road. The station was badly damaged on 24 April 1993 by the Bishopsgate bombing and was temporarily closed as a result.

The redevelopment will create new state-of-the-art offices and retail space in the heart of the financial district, and fund significant improvements to the rail and underground stations, one of London’s busiest transport interchanges.

Marylebone Station
Opened in 1899, it is the youngest of London’s mainline terminal stations, and also one of the smallest, having opened with half the number of platforms originally planned. It is also the only London terminal station to host only diesel trains, having no electrified lines.

Plans by Crossrail to develop 30,000 sqft of residential space in Holborn have been approved by Camden Council. The building development will sit above the Fisher Street shaft – a single storey structure that provides access and ventilation to the below ground Crossrail tunnels.
