Plans by Crossrail to develop 30,000 sqft of residential space in Holborn have been approved by Camden Council. The building development will sit above the Fisher Street shaft – a single storey structure that provides access and ventilation to the below ground Crossrail tunnels. In the first half of 2014 Crossrail will seek a development partner for the site, which sits close to the West End and the British Museum between the conservation areas of Bloomsbury and Kingsway.

John McAslan + Partners wraps-up planning approval for Bond Street Crossrail

Crossrail has been granted its third and final planning consent for the new Crossrail station at Bond Street in the West End of London. The latest approval to be granted by Westminster City Council is for a masterplan station around the eastern side of the scheme, facilitating enhanced accessibility to the ticket hall at Hanover Square.

The masterplan station also increases the size of the over station development, allowing the developer, Great Portland Estates, to maximise the development opportunities of the site.

The overall Bond Street Station project, designed by John McAslan + Partners (JMP), will see the creation of two deep east-west platforms which emerge at street level via two new ticket halls south of Oxford Street. Earlier this year, the practice obtained consent for the ticket halls sited at Hanover Square and Davies Street that define the eastern and western sides of the station respectively.

Hiro Aso, director at JMP, said, “We are delighted that all elements of our design have been approved on this complex and very prominent project in the heart of Mayfair. This latest announcement is particularly exciting as the masterplan station draws on our experience in infrastructure and urban integration to improve the permeability of the station whilst also harnessing the full development opportunities of the site.”

JMP’s new Crossrail Station will be integrated with the existing Tube station to form a combined station that will stretch from Hanover Square to Oxford Street, with the number of daily passengers expected to rise from 155,000 to 225,000 once complete in 2017.

Enabling works have started on site and the next major construction contracts are to be awarded from the end of this year.

BDP Wins Two Major Crossrail Contracts

BDP is delighted to be supporting Hyder Consulting as architects for two Crossrail packages: the design of Whitechapel Station to accommodate Crossrail, London Underground and the East London Line railway, and the Victoria Dock Portal at Royal Victoria Dock in east London.

BDP now adds these packages to the four over-ground Crossrail stations the practice is already working on, with Scott Wilson, at Ealing Broadway, Slough, Maidenhead, and Romford.

BDP director Chris Langston said: “This is a very important opportunity for BDP and we are delighted to be able to continue our support for this great project; it is wonderful news after an intensive bidding period. With Hyder we form a strong partnership and we look forward to progressing the design.”

Crossrail appoints Arup/Atkins team to design Central London twin bore tunnels

Crossrail Ltd (CRL) has confirmed the appointment of an Arup/Atkins team to undertake one of the largest and most important elements of the Crossrail project – the detailed design of the major twin tunnels to be bored beneath Central London.

In all there will be 46 km of 6m diameter tunnel in two parallel bores along a 23km route running from Paddington through to the East of London. This will include a crossing beneath the Thames at Woolwich and interfaces with six major new underground stations. The tunnels will be constructed using Tunnel Boring Machines and it will be one of the largest tunnelling projects in Europe at present.

Duncan Wilkinson, Arup Project Director, said: “This has been a momentous week for Crossrail, Arup and all involved in the project so far. The appointment of the Arup/Atkins team builds on a number of major rail projects across the world where we have successfully collaborated with Atkins. Meanwhile, groundbreaking at the new Canary Wharf Station, of which Arup is lead designer, demonstrates that the project is now truly gathering momentum. We look forward to contributing our knowledge and skills in making the Crossrail vision a reality.”

David Tonkin, Managing Director of Atkins rail business, said: “Crossrail is set to become one of the world’s most prestigious new rail links that demands engineers of the highest calibre and experience. Atkins brings a wealth of expertise from other successful international metro-style projects such as the Dubai Metro, South Africa’s Gautrain, Copenhagen metro, and numerous projects for Hong Kong’s MTRC and KCRC.”

Above ground, the team will also undertake assessment and the design of protection measures for almost 4500 buildings that might be affected by settlement from the tunnelling work, of which around 250 are listed.

Peak resourcing during the18 month design period will reach over 150 staff working in a collaborative design environment within CRL’s Canary Wharf offices.
