Irish Rural Property Development design by Jane D Burnside Architects in Ireland

Viking Long House
Date built: 2009
Design: Jane D Burnside Architects
The Viking Long House – so named for its shape and internal layout – is set within an old apple orchard in a rural location in Ireland. A second lozenge-shaped wall cuts through the house sheltering an entrance courtyard to the North terminating in a sculptural outdoor fireplace to the South. A long covered veranda inset against the southern wall of the main house opens up the ground floor living accommodation to the orchard setting.

Jane Burnside is a specialist NI house architect, according to her practice aboutus page. Uniquely all her contemporary houses are designed personally by architect Jane Burnside. Renowned for blending contemporary architecture into landscape settings, she is clear that being contemporary is not the same thing as being faddish. For her, Contemporary design is not about building wacky spaceships. Instead, being contemporary means drawing on a rich history of architectural influences – from Norman forts to labourers’ cottages; Scottish castles to Renaissance villas; and from Irish bawns to Scandinavian eco-houses.
