The Shuttle — the Dalmia-Gopichand Badminton Academy, Bhubaneswar, India project aims to position the state of odisha on the international badminton map to nurture world-class shuttlers. this unique structure not only serves as a visual landmark but also addresses the practical needs of its environment. given odisha’s susceptibility to cyclones, the hemisphere shape is a strategic choice that minimizes wind pressure and enhances structural resistance. the envelope of glazing at the lower level makes the building seem to levitate above the ground from a distance.
Drawing inspiration from the iconic shuttlecock, the academy’s design cleverly incorporates this form into its architectural vocabulary. at night, the building’s lighting plays with its shape, casting an impression of a shuttlecock in flight. the intent behind the academy was to serve as an iconic visual landmark. the odisha badminton academy is an enormous inverted hemisphere that sits like a sculpture with the playing courts elevated above the entry plaza.
The hemisphere building mass naturally forms the triple-height entrance area with a café, sports shops, and a gaming zone as we move vertically. this entrance serves as a social hub, offering spaces for relaxation and interaction, and ensuring that the academy is more than just a training facility but a community gathering spot. the façade of the building features aluminum shingles cladding, inspired by the local khanda stone of odisha. this choice of material is another element that celebrates the traditional material in contemporary light.
The external amenities include an amphitheater and a jogging track, which encourage physical fitness and relaxation. a 500-seater spectator area offers an elevated view of the action, enhancing the spectator experience with comfortable seating and unobstructed sightlines.
For a unique vantage point, the rooftop features a viewing ring and a dining space, providing a 360-degree panoramic view of bhubaneswar. this elevated perspective, combined with the exceptional design of the rooftop, ensures that every visit to the academy is memorable. The academy’s landscaping and signage contribute to its distinctive identity and user experience. the “walk of fame,” a green promenade bollard, celebrates the achievements of badminton players through commemorative plaques, implying a sense of pride and inspiration.
Upon entering the site, visitors are greeted by an amphitheater, jogging track, and urban elements, including a striking metal shuttlecock sculpture and an infinity pool at the entrance. The internal layout of the academy ensures seamless circulation and access to essential facilities. players benefit from a range of amenities, including an elegant gym, a library, and a specialized science room at the mezzanine level. the training area includes eight international-sized badminton courts, which are housed in a dark box to meet performance needs. however, the design incorporates cut-outs in the slab along the inner shell façade to allow natural diffused light into the courts. this approach minimizes glare and regulates temperature, providing an optimal environment for training while maintaining the functional integrity of the space.
