Fallen Tower Residence

The Mani region in Greece is known for its iconic vertical stone towers, which were originally built for protection and now serve as significant cultural landmarks reflecting the area’s history. In our architectural reinterpretation, we at Kipseli Architects position our stone tower horizontally, making it the centerpiece of the home. This “fallen” tower encourages a seamless flow, uniting the living room, kitchen, and dining area.

Upon entry, occupants are greeted by beautiful sea views that connect the interior with the coastal landscape, creating a tunnel-like experience where the boundaries between inside and outside blur. Additional areas of the home extend from the tower, including bedrooms with slanted roofs that add variety to its shape.

While the defensive purpose of the vertical towers has diminished, these structures remain important to the regional identity. Our horizontal approach honors this heritage while moving away from the towering designs that once symbolized control. By “emasculating” the traditional notion of architecture, we prioritize functional spaces that foster community, connections, and reflection within the home.

This design enhances our relationship with the natural world, creating an environment that invites the outdoors in. It provides a modern model of living that combines the richness of traditional forms with today’s practical needs, encouraging thoughtful dialogue about the role of architecture in our daily lives.

The horizontal layout improves comfort by reducing reliance on stairs, making movement easier and promoting a relaxed lifestyle, especially during vacations. In contrast to the darker and more difficult-to-access towers of Mani, our stone tower embraces the warm Greek climate, allowing for easy access to outdoor spaces and ample sunlight.

As we navigate the balance between heritage and innovation, we at Kipseli Architects engage in a fundamental dilemma: how do we honor the rich traditions of the Mani region while fostering a narrative that speaks to the essence of contemporary life? Nostalgia has its place, but it is the challenge of blending past and present that inspires us to create spaces that resonate with today’s needs and aspirations.

Η περιοχή της Μάνης στην Ελλάδα είναι γνωστή για τους εμβληματικούς κατακόρυφους πέτρινους πύργους της, οι οποίοι αρχικά χτίστηκαν για προστασία και τώρα χρησιμεύουν ως σημαντικά πολιτιστικά ορόσημα που αντικατοπτρίζουν την ιστορία της περιοχής. Στην αρχιτεκτονική επανερμηνεία μας, εμείς στην Kipseli Architects τοποθετούμε οριζόντια τον πέτρινο πύργο μας, καθιστώντας τον το επίκεντρο του σπιτιού. Αυτός ο «πεσμένος» πύργος ενθαρρύνει μια απρόσκοπτη ροή, ενώνοντας το σαλόνι, την κουζίνα και την τραπεζαρία.

Κατά την είσοδο, οι επιβάτες υποδέχονται την όμορφη θέα στη θάλασσα που συνδέει το εσωτερικό με το παραθαλάσσιο τοπίο, δημιουργώντας μια εμπειρία σαν τούνελ όπου τα όρια μεταξύ εσωτερικού και εξωτερικού θολώνουν. Πρόσθετοι χώροι του σπιτιού εκτείνονται από τον πύργο, συμπεριλαμβανομένων υπνοδωματίων με κεκλιμένη στέγη που προσθέτουν ποικιλία στο σχήμα του.

Ενώ ο αμυντικός σκοπός των κάθετων πύργων έχει μειωθεί, αυτές οι δομές παραμένουν σημαντικές για την περιφερειακή ταυτότητα. Η οριζόντια προσέγγισή μας τιμά αυτή την κληρονομιά ενώ απομακρύνεται από τα πανύψηλα σχέδια που κάποτε συμβόλιζαν τον έλεγχο. Με το να «εξαρθρώνουμε» την παραδοσιακή έννοια της αρχιτεκτονικής, δίνουμε προτεραιότητα σε λειτουργικούς χώρους που ενισχύουν την κοινότητα, τις συνδέσεις και τον προβληματισμό μέσα στο σπίτι.

Αυτός ο σχεδιασμός ενισχύει τη σχέση μας με τον φυσικό κόσμο, δημιουργώντας ένα περιβάλλον που προσκαλεί τους εξωτερικούς χώρους. Παρέχει ένα σύγχρονο μοντέλο ζωής που συνδυάζει τον πλούτο των παραδοσιακών μορφών με τις σημερινές πρακτικές ανάγκες, ενθαρρύνοντας τον στοχαστικό διάλογο για τον ρόλο της αρχιτεκτονικής στην καθημερινή μας ζωή.

Η οριζόντια διάταξη βελτιώνει την άνεση μειώνοντας την εξάρτηση από τις σκάλες, διευκολύνοντας την κίνηση και προάγοντας έναν χαλαρό τρόπο ζωής, ειδικά κατά τη διάρκεια των διακοπών. Σε αντίθεση με τους πιο σκοτεινούς και δυσπρόσιτους πύργους της Μάνης, ο πέτρινος πύργος μας αγκαλιάζει το ζεστό ελληνικό κλίμα, επιτρέποντας εύκολη πρόσβαση σε εξωτερικούς χώρους και άφθονο ηλιακό φως.

Καθώς πλοηγούμαστε στην ισορροπία μεταξύ κληρονομιάς και καινοτομίας, εμείς στην Kipseli Architects μπαίνουμε σε ένα θεμελιώδες δίλημμα: πώς τιμούμε τις πλούσιες παραδόσεις της περιοχής της Μάνης ενώ καλλιεργούμε μια αφήγηση που μιλά στην ουσία της σύγχρονης ζωής; Η νοσταλγία έχει τη θέση της, αλλά είναι η πρόκληση του συνδυασμού του παρελθόντος και του παρόντος που μας εμπνέει να δημιουργήσουμε χώρους που αντηχούν με τις ανάγκες και τις φιλοδοξίες του σήμερα.
