4a Architekten add a modern atmosphere to a listed villa in the south of France

Villa Le Trident

Stuttgart, August 2012. The contract won by 4a Architekten from Stuttgart to redesign a villa with listed-building status in Théoule offers wonderful prospects. Built in 1926, the building is not only impressive because of its splendid location on the French Riviera, but is also something special with regard to its history: The Villa Le Trident is the first of numerous villas built and resided in by the American architect Barry Dierks on the coast of the Mediterranean.

Work on the interior of the existing building has now been largely completed. The living and dining area with an open-plan kitchen as well as a library are located on the ground floor.

The upper storey offers space for four bedrooms, each of which has an en suite bathroom. The architects’ aim was to give the interior of the building as spacious an appearance as possible. Well-lit rooms with long window facades offer excellent views, while white varnished solid oak floorboards and glass elements create a bright, flowing feeling to the space.

Individual elements such as the furniture, a fireplace and chimney suspended from the ceiling, teak-panelled fixtures and the wall element, which was designed by the architects and located in the library, set distinctive accents in this ambience, which is characterised by tranquillity and reduction. The flowing spatial sensation continues on the upper floor. A teak-panelled cube in the room accommodates bathrooms and a dressing room, while the long window facade with its sea views also remains undisturbed.

The next phase of construction, due to start in the autumn of 2012, is an extension to the north with more guest bedrooms and a wellness area on the ground floor, and the modification of the entrance hall and stairwell. The entire building project, including the outdoor grounds, is due for completion in the summer of 2013.
