Project Description

These specialist units, situated at the site of Lour Picou Local Hospital in Beaugency (France), cater for patients who have a tendency to wander. This feature makes it an entirely innovative and specific establishment which, in particular, includes large corridors and community areas adapted to the illness. Thanks to the large internal areas, we hope that these units will become prototypes for the development of future establishments better suited to specific pathologies.

From the external access to the two units, there is a view over the community areas through the glazed gallery which connects it to the existing building. These are not built facing the street, because there is only a road outside and there are no shops or any views of local life. Elderly people and people suffering from mental problems enjoy watching movement and life. That is why we felt it to be important to create a play area for grandchildren in the large patio. The outward-looking direction of all the community areas and the wish to direct this extension towards the garden and its plants, support the idea of a garden space accessible and open to elderly people with mobility problems.

Upstairs, the units also have accessible and secure terraces. All the corridors always have natural lighting in several places in order to offer users a series of perspectives and plays on natural light inviting elderly people to walk freely around the unit and keep in touch with the outside world through the extension of the community areas opening on to the gardens. The harmony of the interior colours helps residents to coordinate themselves more easily in line with changes in perception which occur with age: brightly coloured bedroom doors, atmospheres created with colour schemes, etc.
