Madrid, May 18th 2011. On June 24-26 IE School of Architecture will host the second edition of the International Architectural Education Summit, a bi-annual meeting of deans and directors of the world´s top architecture schools. The summit was first held two years ago in Tokyo by UCLA’s Director of Architecture and Urban Design, Hitoshi Abe.

“Globalization, technology, and other challenges have clearly impacted architecture. The academics gathering at the Summit clearly see the importance of looking towards the future.” says Hitoshi Abe, Director of Architecture and Urban Design at UCLA.

The 2011 Summit will bring together top educators from around the world to debate pressing issues facing architectural education, with a special focus on Innovation in Architectural Education, and to explore ways to assure excellence within the changing academic, professional and global arenas.

“Architecture education and the profession are at a crossroads. The Summit is a timely and unique opportunity to debate innovative alternatives for the future from multiple perspectives.” says Martha Thorne, Associate Dean of External Relations at IE School of Architecture and co-organizer of the summit.

Participating schools include UCLA, Harvard, AA, Bartlett School of Architecture, Ecole Spéciale d’Architecture (Paris), IIT College of Architecture, Berlage Institute, University of Calgary, ANCB, University of Michigan, Delft University of Technology, Princeton, China Academy of Art, CEPT University (Ahmedabad), Waseda University (Tokyo), Columbia and IE School of Architecture – IE University. Their deans and directors will discuss the future of education.

Throughout the three-day conference specific panels will address facets of interdisciplinary collaboration, the opportunities and challenges of education in a digital environment, alternative educational platforms, and the need for and implications of global outreach.

The Summit will open on June 24 with a public address by Thom Mayne at CaixaForum Madrid, (in a building designed by Herzog and de Meuron), and will continue on Saturday and Sunday with four panel sessions, complete with discussions, held in the convent, founded in the 13th century, that houses the IE University campus in Segovia.
