The firm’s design, entitled Between Earth and Sky, was named the second-place winner in the international competition for a new archive and performance space for the famed composer.

“Our design is defined by the conversation between earth and sky, at the intersection of stone and light,” said Brad Cloepfil, Founder and Design Principal of AWA. “The building inscribes the earth with a calligraphy of stone, defining the Centre’s domain within the conifer forest.”

The 2,270 sqm project was designed as a place of inspiration and reflection, a place of study and a place of making.

Arvo Pärt Centre

The intersection of earth and sky creates the context and contrast of dark and light, a range of qualities and experience that provoke acts of creativity.

Honoring the ethics and legacy of Arvo Pärt, the new Centre is envisioned as a place between: the individual and the community, song and silence, earth and sky, life and eternity.
