Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios win University of Portsmouth competition
A multi-disciplinary design team led by Feilden Clegg Bradley (FCBS) has been selected to design the University of Portsmouth’s New Academic Building on the Victoria Site.
The New Academic Building will serve as a northern gateway to the University’s city centre campus and will bring together the Faculty of Business and Law with the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. As well as providing accommodation for academic research and teaching and learning, the new building will also provide student support services, general administrative space and public space on the ground floor.
The design proposals developed by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios were selected from an exceptionally strong shortlist that also included (in alphabetical order of the architect firm leading the multi-disciplinary design team): Allford Hall Monaghan Morris Ltd., Hawkins\Brown Design Ltd., Nicholas Hare Architects LLP and Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners LLP.
Professor Graham Galbraith, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Portsmouth, said: ‘’I am extremely pleased to announce FCB Studios as the winner of the RIBA International Design Competition for our new academic building. We had a large number of high quality submissions and the panel felt that the practice’s extensive experience in the higher education sector was very evident. The panel agreed that the building would create a strong identity for the University and a statement for the city.
“The design is an outstanding example of a sustainable and environmentally responsible building. By bringing the two faculties together within one building, it will enable us to become a centre for collaboration, creativity, innovation and above all inspiration and interaction.”
Andy Theobald, Partner, FCB Studios said “We are delighted to have won the RIBA competition for the University of Portsmouth for the new Victoria Park Academic building. Located centrally in the city the building links the southern and northern campus together with a new landmark building for the University which also forms a new eastern gateway into the city. Consider as a singular and sculptural piece the building is located alongside the railway in Victoria Park creating a new civic frontage to the University.
Our proposals aim to deliver new academic neighbourhoods combined with inspirational teaching and learning that will enable innovative working, collaboration and creativity across the two faculties. Flexible enough to serve and evolve with the University we have echoed the brief’s ambitions to establish a careful balance of environmental, economic and social sustainability. Shortlist announced to design New Academic Building on the Victoria Site, University of Portsmouth
Tuesday 30 July 2019 – RIBA Competitions is pleased to announce the shortlist on behalf of the University of Portsmouth for the design of its proposed New Academic Building within the city’s Victoria Park area.
The five short-listed teams (in alphabetical order of the architect firm leading the multi-disciplinary team) are:

The five teams selected to participate in the negotiation phase will be invited to outline their proposed approach to the project at a series of design workshops with the University of Portsmouth project team. The process will conclude with teams invited to submit final tenders presenting their developed design concepts at a clarification interview in late October 2019.

New Academic Building on the Victoria Site: Multi-disciplinary design team sought by the University of Portsmouth
RIBA Competitions is pleased to announce the launch of a ‘Competitive Procedure with Negotiation’ process on behalf of the University of Portsmouth. The process is seeking to select a multi-disciplinary team for the design of a proposed c.20,000m2
New Academic Building within the city’s Victoria Park area.
The New Academic Building is intended to serve as a northern gateway to the University’s city centre campus and will bring together the Faculty of Business and Law with the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences into the building. Doing so will provide opportunities for subject area growth and development of stronger inter-relationships and collaboration amongst staff and students across the Faculties and their constituent Schools.
As well as providing accommodation for academic research and teaching and learning, it is anticipated that the New Academic Building will also provide student support services, general administrative space and potentially a destination dining experience that would be open to members of the general public.
In the first instance, Expressions of Interest are invited in accordance with the requirements set out in a Selection Questionnaire. Details of how to obtain the SQ together with supporting information are contained within a Memorandum of Information available from www.architecture.com/Competitions
Up to a maximum of five bid teams will be short-listed and invited to participate in the negotiation phase, which will include design approach workshop sessions leading to the submission of final tenders in early October 2019. An equal honorarium of GBP £20,000 (+VAT) will be paid to each of the bid teams that are invited to, and submit a compliant final tender, and who attends a clarification interview presentation. Honorarium payments will be paid to the consultancy firm leading each multi-disciplinary design team.
The Memorandum of Information provides further details about the project scope for the New Academic Building on the Victoria Site, the procurement process and programme. The deadline for receipt of SQ returns is 12.00hrs (BST) on 04 July 2019.
