EASA 013 Pavilion Design Competition Winners
EASA 013 Pavilion Architecture competition, Slovenia
The committee for the international student competition to select the best solution to build a pavilion on Žužemberk’s main square received 24 proposals. Due to the open nature of the competition’s guidelines the proposals were very diverse. The committee is aware that the task was complex as it demanded an urban solution to revitalise the square as well as an architectural and design solution to offer the inhabitants a new – covered public space. The specific feature of this project was the strong symbolism of the space as Saint Jacob’s church used to stand on its ground.
The following evaluation criteria were used for selecting the winning entry:
• spatial placement of the object (layout, harmony with the context and other facilities)
• attitude towards the demolished building (symbolism, memory, protection of heritage)
• usability, multi-purpose, programme innovation
• sensible use of materials according to the function, meaning and possible temporariness (technology, construction)
• the cost of maintenance, environmental friendliness
The first prize went to Jack Richards and Will Burgess from Great Britain,

who impressed by a simple and clever construction, partly inspired by the traditional hayrack, cleverly positioned, correctly oriented and nicely entitled – Timber tales.
In addition to the winners, 5 honourable mentions were awarded to:
• Eugene Reshetov, Maria Kachalova, Pavel Kirpichnikov, Tatiana Sinelnikova and Asya Baranova from Russia

4 Feb 2013 – registration closing date
11 Feb 2013 – submission deadline
An open, anonymous, single-stage, student and young graduates up to 5 years from graduating, international architecture competition for the pavilion on the square in Žužemberk.
The object of this architecture competition is the selection of an appropriate solution to build a pavilion on the site of the former Saint Jacob’s church in Žužemberk, the foundations of which are still buried underneath the square. The solution is supposed to find a possible interpretation of the building’s heritage while suggesting a new, appropriate, contemporary pavilion, which would serve the locals and the municipality. The pavilion will be built during the assembly EASA 013 in Žužemberk.
The programme is linked to the desires of citizens, presented at the workshop on 5 Oct 2012 in Žužemberk. The pavilion should be a covered or partially covered open space for sitting, talking, socializing, presentations, gatherings, musical events and selling locally grown products. We also expect a presentation of the temporal and generational division of use of the pavilion.
1st Prize: 600 euros
