Zhangjiajie National Forest Park Glass Bridge Closure

Just 13 days after opening this spectacular Chinese bridge has been forced to close.

The world’s highest and longest glass-bottomed bridge opened only on 22 August. The structure spans a deep canyon between two mountain cliffs in central Hunan province.

Officials told CNN that the popularity of the tourist attraction meant urgent maintenance in the area was needed.

“We’re overwhelmed by the volume of visitors,” a spokesperson from the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon’s marketing and sales department said.

Prior to opening the authorities had organised a media event where people were encouraged to try and smash the bridge’s 99 panels of clear glass with a sledge hammer. They also drove a car across the six metre-wide structure.

The pr efforts partly resulted from a glass bridge cracking incident at the Yuntai mountain in northern Henan in 2015.

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park replaced its rickety wooden-plank road that hugged the edge of a cliff with a similar glass structure in April 2014. The 1,500m-long “road of the brave” had attracted over 4.3 million visitors up to the end of March 2015.
