Casa Araçás, Brazil
Located in an urban area, outside of gated communities, Casa Araçás, situated on a corner lot, presented significant challenges, mainly due to strict setbacks: 5.00 meters at the front and 3.50 meters on the side. The non-orthogonal geometry of the land extended these requirements to the rear setback as well, imposed by the proximity to a local road.
These legal restrictions, far from limiting the project, guided the creation of a clean aesthetic. The house belongs to a young couple, one of whom is an engineer who, in addition to actively participating in the creative process, personally managed the construction. This allowed for the testing of various exposed concrete solutions, including the table in the outdoor leisure area, where the couple often enjoys their daily meals.
The strategic use of the outdoor spaces, such as the pool, wooden deck, and biophilic landscaping, establishes a seamless connection with the indoor environments. The house’s structure, built with reinforced concrete, combines robust masonry and raw materials, complemented by large windows that serve as portals for natural light and ventilation.
Deliberately located in one of the corners, the helicoidal staircase made of exposed reinforced concrete creates an atmosphere of mystery, highlighted by a single cone of light in the living room. This focused lighting emphasizes the staircase, which emerges as a true sculpture, reinforcing its central role in the design. The decision not to directly connect the living room to the kitchen preserves the individuality of the internal spaces, offering a pleasant surprise as the landscaping and outdoor leisure area, harmoniously integrated with the kitchen, are gradually revealed.
At the back of the house, a hammock area was created, reflecting the owners’ habit of spending time in a hammock, a tradition passed down from their families. Another special feature of the landscaping is the large wooden wheel, which served as the backdrop for the altar during the couple’s wedding, held at the house after its completion. Keeping the wheel in this space evokes a cherished memory, adding emotional value to the project.
Empty spaces play a fundamental role in the architecture, creating moments of transition and contemplation. These voids further highlight the contrast between the house’s raw elements, providing visual pauses that enhance the project’s harmony and balance. Similarly, the living spaces — the living room, kitchen, and outdoor living area — connect organically, creating continuity and spaciousness. The dark tone of the exposed concrete panels creates a striking contrast between the different spaces and volumes.
The private area, located on the upper floor, contains two bedrooms and a multifunctional room, easily adaptable for use as a home office, TV room, or guest space. The façades, with their concrete panels echoing the rhythm of the social areas, define the different levels of the house. Vertical concrete slats alternate with white volumes, giving the upper floor a sense of lightness and floating when viewed from outside.
