The house is located on the edge of a cliff overlooking Browns Island in the Waitemata Harbour. The clients had lived on the site for thirty five years in a deteriorating timber house and were keen to build a new home to live in for the rest of their lives.
An expansive three bedroom plus study family home was requested by our client for this large Westmere site. They came with an appreciation of dark timbers, Japanese design and Californian Modernism.
The subject site fronts a main street (Union Street) to the south and a private car park that abuts and wraps around the northern and eastern interfaces of the site.

The Alemanys 5 house is situated in the oldest part of Girona’s “Barri Vell” (Old District) inside the area of the original city walls, Catalunya, Spain design by Anna Noguera Architect
The site is occupied by a grand two storey High Victorian style residence circa 1870. Whilst the house is not listed in any heritage registers, Heritage Council documents state that it ‘appears to be the work of architect Ferdinand Reuss who constructed many High Victorian Residences in Glebe, including ‘Hamilton’ and ‘Reussdale’ on the same road.
