Tomorrow’s Train Design Today Competition

New ideas competition which asks competitors to propose new design solutions to improve passenger rolling stock across the GB rail network.

The FutureRailway team and the Department for Transport (DfT) in association with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) are inviting architects, engineers and designers worldwide to consider two design challenges – 4C’s train challenge – longer-term horizon designs for rolling stock that push the envelope of what can be delivered and Next-Gen Train interiors – medium-term horizon designs for rolling stock interiors that focus on flexibility and adaptability to meet different service requirements.

The 12 story building will contain 25,000m2 of office space., the ground floor contains gardens and a restaurant. There is also a business club, conference centre, gym and pool on the top floor.

RIAS Awards 2014: Buildings, Architects

Cathedral of Christ the Light, Oakland, California

Design: Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM). Set on a prominent, two-block site overlooking Oakland’s Lake Merritt, the 1350-seat cathedral building is the centerpiece of a 226,000-sqft complex that includes a mausoleum, conference center, administrative offices, bishop’s and clergy residences, bookstore, café, and community-serving ministries.
Within the cathedral, the experience of light and space, rather than traditional iconography, instills a deep sense of sacredness.

Heritage Lottery Fund Scotland Grants: historic buildings

Scotland’s oldest working theatre and concert hall take centre stage thanks to Heritage Lottery investment. The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) announced support totalling almost £2.7million to help secure the futures of the Theatre Royal in Dumfries, St Cecilia’s Hall Edinburgh, Dunoon Burgh Hall, and Kirkcudbright Art Gallery.

Located on one of the most scenic waterfront lots in Sausalito, Barrel House Tavern occupies 5,000 sqft on Bridgeway Avenue. CCS Architecture receives a IIDA Northern California Chapter Honor Award for this building. With 140 seats, the restaurant features an enormous Carrera marble bar, a cozy lounge, wood fired pizza oven, and waterfront seating with breathtaking views of the Bay and San Francisco beyond.

551W21 New York Condo, NYC Apartments

Scott Resnick and Brown Harris Stevens announce the opening of the sales office for 551W21, the new 19-story luxury condominium in West Chelsea by architects Foster + Partners. Designed by Lee Mindel of Shelton, Mindel & Associates, the sales office meticulously presents the signature interior elements of Foster + Partners’ building design.

The condominium overlooks the Hudson River and features 44 large-scaled residences. Beyer Blinder Belle is the executive architect for the building.

Shukhov Radio Tower, Moscow high rise

Moscow’s Shukhov Radio Tower is a 50-story conical structure of steel latticework designed by the legendary engineer Vladimir Shukhov. Proposals are in place to demolish this famous tower building. Opponents of the demolition are mobilising to counter this threat to an architectural treasure.

The hyperbolic tower was designed and constructed by the great Russian engineer and scientist Vladimir Shukhov (1853-1939) in 1929 on the Oka River.
