Roofing Day 2024: Amplifying Voices on Capitol Hill

May 17, 2024

Roofing Day 2024 was quite the gathering in Washington, D.C. this year! Organized by the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA), it brought together a whole spectrum of people from the roofing world—contractors, manufacturers, you name it. They all convened at the Grand Hyatt over April 16-17 to talk about everything from taxes to technology in their industry, which, by the way, is a whopping $50 billion market.

The main goal? To make sure lawmakers hear what’s needed to keep this industry on the upswing. McKay Daniels, the NRCA’s CEO, really fired up the crowd with his speech, essentially saying, “If we don’t speak up for our industry, who will?” He was thrilled with the turnout, which included big names and regional groups all ready to dive into advocacy.

For folks who were new to this kind of thing, the event had special training sessions to help them feel confident about talking to Congress. That’s a big deal because, let me tell you, the timing was tricky. There was a lot going on politically—something about impeachment proceedings that could have diverted attention from the day’s goals.

But the roofing reps didn’t let that stop them. They had their meetings lined up with members of Congress to discuss everything from labor laws to funding for tech education, specifically under the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act. They also pushed for support on bipartisan bills that would help with workforce training and even a visa system to address labor shortages in construction.

By the end of it, everyone seemed really pumped about having made their case directly to the decision-makers. The event also had some great networking opportunities, thanks to the sponsors. All in all, Roofing Day 2024 wasn’t just about discussing challenges; it was a powerful display of unity and a reminder of the importance for every roofing company to stay engaged with those who craft the policies that affect this vital industry.

State of the Roofing Industry

The roofing industry is quite a bustling sector within the construction world right now. In 2023, the global roofing market was valued at a hefty $127.52 billion, and guess what? It’s expected to climb to around $192.80 billion by 2032. That’s a solid annual growth rate of about 4.7% over the next few years.

Now, focusing on the U.S. alone, the roofing industry stood at $23.35 billion last year and is on track to reach $41.50 billion by 2032, growing at a pace of about 6.6% each year (Fixr.com). What’s driving this surge? Well, there’s a lot of action on both the residential and commercial fronts. For instance, the demand for residential roofing is projected to jump significantly, aiming for a $15 billion mark by 2025.

What’s really exciting is how technology and a push for sustainability are shaking things up. Metal roofs and asphalt shingles are super popular because they’re not only tough and cost-effective, but they also come with an easy setup. Specifically, asphalt shingles are a big hit, commanding over half the market revenue in 2023.

There’s also a big push towards green roofing. These eco-friendly roofs are not just good for the environment but they’re also great for cutting down energy costs thanks to better insulation. This shift is partly thanks to stricter building regulations that are encouraging more sustainable construction practices.

All in all, the roofing industry’s future looks bright with a lot of innovative and sustainable options making their way onto rooftops across the globe. It’s an exciting time with growth spurred by new technologies and a growing demand for eco-friendly solutions.
