- Find the culprit first
The type of fence you will choose primarily depends on the culprit that is around. Usually, critters like deer, groundhogs, and rabbits are the ones that cause maximum damage. It is seen that deer leave footprints in the soil. Also, they feed on herbaceous plants.

And as far as groundhogs are concerned, they leave large mounds in the ground. They feed on green plants.
- Fencing the area
If you have the fence in place, you can keep critters at bay. The most important thing is to prevent the critters from getting close to the source of food. Install a fence, the height of which is a few feet tall. To keep the fence steady and not tilt by the activities of the critters, dig the area beneath the fence at least 10″ deep.
Your expenses will depend on the type of fence you are putting up and the critter that you are trying to avoid from entering your premises. For deer, a 4 feet tall fence will suffice. And 8 feet fence is ideal for a groundhog.
- Choose plants that do not appeal to critters
When you are placing plants or selecting them for your backyard, it is best to opt for the ones that do not appeal to the animals. In this way, even if your fence is not very tall for the animals, you will know that they will drop into your backyard only to realize that they have nothing to gain in your backyard as the plants are not their source of food.
- Raised beds help
One of the better ways to keep the animals is to place a fence atop raised beds. Alternatively, you can also use pots for plants and keep them on the beds with fencing all around.
