Dutch Architect of the year
Marc Koehler Architects is nominated for the Dutch Architect of the year 2021, presented by Architectenweb.
The jury about the selection of MKA: “Truly groundbreaking architecture in general and housing in particular in all its conditions, that is the ambition of Marc Koehler Architects. In their projects the residents have a major influence on the layout of their home, and sometimes even co-commission it. But it doesn’t stop there, they want to design timeless resilient homes that are adaptable, future ready and climate proof.”

In Leiden, private commissioning was chosen for the development of the residential area Nieuw Leyden on the former slaughterhouse site. For the house in the corner plot that the studio Sophie Valla Architects and Marc Koehler Architects were asked to design, the corner was chosen as starting point and inspiration. The end result offers the inhabitants an unexpected sense of space and changing views.

House IJburg, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Date built: 2008
photo : Marcel van der Burg (Primabeeld)
The 140 m2 house is located on a small plot in IJburg; a recently developed suburb of the city of Amsterdam. The house is designed as a vertical garden giving space to flora and fauna to grow in a densely urbanised area. Closed private spaces contrast with open collective spaces, that seem to have been ‘carved out’ from the solid volume as a continuous transparent void. In this way the interior space is visually and physically connected to the street, the garden and roof terraces. Outdoor- and indoor spaces become one and natural daylight flows into the interior.

The Pearl Café on Westerstraat
Café de Parel was originally a typical Amsterdam ‘brown bar’ with an old-fashioned dark interior and low lighting. The traditional stained-glass windows and monumental tile tableaus create the perfect setting for the new Parel.
