The ‘Villa – Completed Buildings’ category winner was High Horse Ranch in the USA, designed by KieranTimberlake Associates. The collection of a main house and two satellite guest cabins in California’s Mendocino County wowed the judges, who felt the project “develops a new discourse in architecture in relation to off-site construction, even in unbuilt landscapes.”

Loblolly House
Positioned between a dense grove of loblolly pines and a lush foreground of saltmeadow cordgrass and the bay, Loblolly House seeks to deeply fuse the natural elements of this barrier island to architectural form. The timber foundations are at once pragmatic because they minimize the disruption to the ground, and poetic because the dwelling is literally founded on the tree. At the same time, the north, south and east elevations are of the forest. The design of the staggered vertical rain screen was literally composed over a site photograph to evoke the abstraction of solids and voids of the forest wall.

To further our understanding of architecture and develop new ways to see, design and make the products around us, we place research and development at the core of our practice. KTA employ collective rather than singular intelligence in the making of architecture. The process used by KTA is holistic involving many layers of information and participants at one time. Our art is the discovery of external and internal logics derived from this exploration.

An award-winning and internationally recognized architecture firm, KTA is noted for its research, innovation and inventive design. Founded in Philadelphia in 1984 by Stephen Kieran, FAIA, and James Timberlake, FAIA, the firm is comprised of fifty-four professionals.

Recent projects by KieranTimberlake Associates include Loblolly House in Taylors Island Maryland, the new Sculpture Building at Yale University, Sidwell Friends School in Washington, DC and the West Campus Residential Initiative at Cornell University.
