Tampa International Airport SouthWest Terminal

SouthWest Terminal Tampa International Airport, Airside C Florida

Brief:

Design and construction of a new $77 million airside terminal. The new 16-gate, 315,000 s.f. facility will be served by a new baggage conveyor system and a four car passenger shuttle transfer system. Southwest Airlines will use the majority of gates (12) at the new airside.

Detailed:

The air terminal expresses the drama and excitement of travel through its architecture as the building design is a conscious effort to capture the nostalgia of a time when flying was a glamorous experience. A design intent on evoking the memory of what was once considered an event rather than what has become an emotionless, ordinary form of mass transportation.

Wrapped around the Northeast corner of the airport, the terminals continuous roof plane hovers over passengers ready for flight. A series of static moments begin to unfold appearing within the luminous atmosphere of the dynamic airside.

Below the roof plane panoramic views of Tampa layered with aircraft in flight are presented while one passes their time. Along the walnut towers and white marble walls of the terminal, public art installations engage passengers as they move about the airside. Awaiting security one is greeted by an 11′ x 17′ oil painting cantilevered off a concrete shear wall depicting the Golden Era of airline travel.

Then straight ahead floating over airline concessions is a sculpture entitled “q” portraying a time-line of advances in airline travel. As one passes security and heads north an 8′ tall bronze barnstormer statue emerges in front of a curved walnut and Venetian plaster wall.

At the north end of the building placed below the oculus piercing through the metal ceiling grid, is an aluminum orange blossom sculpture surrounded by tables and chairs.

Exiting the terminal 16 Italian glass mosaic medallions are discovered, set into the terrazzo flooring below, becoming portals for the eye and mind. Sizes ranging from 48″, 36″, 24″ to 10″ in diameter they are illuminated by the light cannons sliced through the cherry ceiling above.
