How to Get Your Michigan Real Estate License

If you’re wondering how to become a real estate agent in Michigan, there are some things you need to know. It takes dedication and hard work, but you can do it if you commit to the process and have the support you need, both personally and professionally.
Before you begin looking into how to get your real estate license in Michigan, you must be 18 years old or older and have completed at least forty hours of approved education. There are plenty of real estate courses online and other opportunities.
Most state requirements to earn a real estate license are similar, and here’s what you need to do in Michigan to become a real estate agent.
Prequalification and Education
You need to be at least 18 years old and a citizen of the United States (or a permanent resident alien). You also need to show proof that you completed high school or received an equivalent certification.
Next, you must complete forty hours of certified education, which means taking a Michigan Real Estate Fundamentals course. The pre-licensing education will prepare you for the final licensing exam and provide the information you need to pass.
The course reviews real estate law and how to pass the exam, but it doesn’t give you practical experience in the field. It’s up to you to learn the tips and tricks of being a salesperson and building your own business.
Application and Authorization
Now, you can apply for your real estate license, which can be online at the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs. The application and your fees are valid for one year, so you have one year to take the exam.
If you already have an employing broker to sponsor you, list them on your application, and you’ll receive a photo license at the PSI exam site when you complete your exam. If you do not have to have a broker yet, you’ll need to wait for authorization to take the exam after applying.
Registration and Examination
Check your email for a message from the State of Michigan LARA telling you it’s time to register. The email contains an exam candidate ID number required at the time of registration. You can register for the exam on the PSI website.
After you register, you’ll need to take the exam and pass it to receive your Michigan real estate license. PSI administers an exam with 115 questions divided into two sections. These divisions cover both national and individual state requirements.
You have 180 minutes to complete the exam.
Brokering and Licensing
Once you pass the exam, you’ll need to select an employing broker. You will not receive your license until the state receives your employing broker notification. Selecting a broker is a vital step at the beginning of your qualification process.
When you’re at school learning, you should also be networking. During this networking process, you need to be looking for a broker you like, who is willing to hire you contingent upon you passing the exam.
Here are some aspects to consider when choosing a broker:
- Do they have a good reputation locally? What about at a national level?
- What kind of agents are they looking for, and do they have the tools you need to grow as a new agent?
- Do they have the latest technology and systems that allow you to do your job effectively?
- What kind of training, education, and advancement opportunities do they offer?
- What does the commission structure look like?
- Do they have benefits like paid vacation and health insurance?
- Will they give you leads and marketing materials, or do you have to provide your own?
Once you choose your employing broker, you can confirm the broker on the LARA website, and your license will be issued.
Prepare yourself for a lot of hard work that will be worth it in the end. It’s a great career choice for many people. It can be fun and flexible, but you’ll only be successful if you commit to it.
