With multiple energetic children and large dogs, the owners of Connections and Flow House, a single-family home aspired to update their layout and finishes to better suit their active lifestyle. The double-height ceiling in the main entrance is emphasized by a wood custom door, along with a newly finished central staircase that is encapsulated by full-height glass doors at adjoining hallways.

Removing a secondary staircase provided ample space for a large mud room with an integrated laundry, individualized wood storage cabinets, and tucked away closet. This also allowed for maximizing the upper-level recreational area with a new private wrestling space.

In the upper level, a free-flowing plan for larger gatherings was accomplished with the removal of an unused desk nook that separated the kitchen and dining areas. Customized wood kitchen cabinetry with a new beverage area enhances the flow between spaces.

In the great room, a set of narrow windows and doors were replaced with a single larger sliding door with clerestory windows, greatly improving the connection between indoor and outdoor areas while providing stunning views of the foothills. A tongue-and-groove ceiling accented by dark beams and columns at the upper deck complement the existing adjacent interior cinder block fireplace wall with a new concrete hearth. The owner’s bath is elevated using rift white oak cabinetry that is contrasted by dark fixtures, brass tones, white herringbone tile patterns, and varied grey flooring to create an uplifting and soothing space.

The open-floor plan, seamless transitions, and combination of contrasting materials unify the family’s needs with its design. Thoughtful flows and connections between spaces create an efficient, welcoming environment, giving the house the energy to meet the family’s needs head-on.
