Centre for Civil and Human Rights in Atlanta
Wings of Change : Re-shaping the Past, Present, and Future
Design: David Rockwell Architect
Centre of Civil and Human Rights is a new purpose built museum in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, that tells the parallel stories of both the Civil Rights movement in the USA and also the global story of the Human Rights.
The Civil Rights galleries will consist of a series of sequential gallery spaces that tell the Civil Rights story in a largely chronological manner.
The spaces will be a mix of traditional and multi-media exhibits, in a light- and sound-controlled environment, which offers a theatrical and immersive experience.
The Human Rights gallery is more thematically organised as opposed to chronological and sequential. Visitors can wander among the exhibits and gallery in an open-ended manner.
Both stories merge in a shared gallery where the positive outcomes and accomplishments of the Civil Rights and Human Rights stories are told. The space is iconic, and the stories end in a celebratory manner.
A final shared gallery provides a link between the gallery spaces and the lobby, serving as a place for visitors to linger, discusses their experiences, and explore ways to get involved with various causes.
This space overlooks the lobby, becoming shared common ground with the energy of a café.
