For a Bay Area-based couple, their elegant retreat overlooking the Rocky Mountains in the Yellowstone Club near Big Sky, Montana, offers a serene escape from hectic city life. When the couple enlisted Richard Beard Architects and interior designer Kelly Hohla to refresh their 2007 home’s dated interiors, they had one request: a lighter, more contemporary look with clean lines.
To achieve this, the design team began by adding a two-story extension that introduced more space and functionality to the four-bedroom residence. This expansion provided room for a deluxe ski-in mudroom and a cozy new breakfast nook, which seamlessly extends from the existing dining area. The living room also saw a significant upgrade, with the installation of an additional window that captures breathtaking views of the majestic valley below. Outside, a massive outdoor fireplace on the veranda was removed, revealing an even more sublime and previously obscured sightline.
Throughout the home, new finishes in stone, glass, wood, and steel were introduced, creating a modernized and airy aesthetic. The once-heavy beige tones were swapped for soft whites, while much of the dark oak was painted to align with the lighter theme. In the kitchen, the old dark backsplash tiles were replaced with a cheerful graphic pattern, and a custom-designed island was added to anchor the space, enhancing its flow. The couple’s primary suite was also refreshed, featuring a soothing pale grey palette and natural stone tile in the enlarged, spa-like bathroom.
In contrast to the rest of the house, the new breakfast nook retains a warm, darker atmosphere, with rich-stained reclaimed barn wood on the walls. Subtle touches, including layered textiles and sculptural lighting fixtures, introduce soft metallic accents and add a sophisticated, modern touch throughout the home.
