The Old Vic is submitting a planning application for a restoration and redevelopment project in order to sustain the 195 year old London landmark for the next generation of theatre-goers, creative talent, local community and the general public. The Old Vic has appointed award-winning architects Bennetts Associates to devise a restoration scheme, which will be submitted for planning permission to Lambeth Council in November.

Planning consent has been granted for the redevelopment of this Grade II* listed building. The theatre, an iconic landmark on Shaftesbury Avenue in London’s West End, has had the proposals of Bennetts Associates Architects granted by Camden Council. The project consists of internal and external alterations to the theatre’s existing stagehouse and flytower, ensuring the long-term viability of the venue to accommodate large-scale, self-produced and touring productions.

Wandsworth Council’s planning applications committee has approved plans for a highly distinctive theatre redevelopment on Garratt Lane, Earlsfield. The striking design would see the theatre’s historic brickwork façade restored and the building extended to the side, rear and at roof level. The new element would be encased in a bright terracotta render incorporating a distinctive tree motif.

The new theatre designed by Foster Wilson Architects has been built on the site of the old Westminster Theatre, which was destroyed by fire in 2002. The Theatre Complex includes a new 312 seat auditorium as well as a 100 seat studio theatre, bar and restaurant. Above the theatre is a new apartment building, designed by Loates Taylor Shannon with interiors designed in conjunction with Nicky Haslam.
