Petnjica is the newest administrative unit in Montenegro having cca 6,800 citizens only. It gained municipality status in 2013. It is situated in area called Bihor, which had parish status in medieval times with significant fortification facility, nowadays being ruins.
The buildings were conceived by Architectenbureau Cepezed with a focus on a variety of theme’s, such as representativeness, spatial quality, functionality, flexibility, comfort and sustainability.
The proposal by Mecanoo Architects re-activates the building as cultural attraction with ‘light touch’ interventions, improving accessibility and reinforcing existing connections. the Dutch architecture office beat Richard Murphy Architects, Hoskins Architects, Austin Smith Lord and LDN.
