ATARAZANAS MARKET
The building, now delivered to the merchants, is the result of an architectural competition organized by de Ministry of Public Works in the year 2000, and given to Aranguren & Gallegos Architects.
It was a rehabilitation and recovery operation of the former Central Wholesale Food Market of Atarazanas, as well as sanitation and hygienic operation of the market stalls. This is a singular building in iron structure of the late nineteenth century with a unique commercial floor, at ground level, structured in three specific areas for commerce, respectively for fruit and vegetables, fish and meat.

The competition was required to recover the original design of the former Atarazanas Market under the architect´s layout Rucoba, enhancing its nature and monumental architecture.
The project responds to all these conditions through a series of proposed actions, based on the respect and the revive of the historical character of the building, bringing out its monumental architecture.

In order to recover the original outline of the building, the demolition of all those later additions that prevented the perfect interpretation of the building is carried out, as in the case of the central mezzanine floor added in 1973, where the cafeteria and service was located which without adding practical use and commercial offer, distorted the perspective, space and beauty of the construction. Its demolition allows the recovery of the great central space and the visual connection of the great axis of the Atarazanas Door and the great stained glass window, a space in a unique plan without architectonic barriers and market stalls like objects placed in a great container.
Therefore, the original idea of the Rucoba´s project is restored, estimated the most consistent for the perfect function and understanding of the building.

The Market rehabilitation incorporates the idea of complete respect to architectural design and spatial conception of the existing building, and its essential action is to design a formal and spatial organization of the market stalls allowing the vision of the great Market space, and at the same time an adaptation of the whole to the actual necessities, that way users circulations are provided and improved through unity of interior and exterior space, removing architectural barriers and making the market accessible to all persons with disabilities.
Similarly, in order to devise a more adequate space, a new centralized registrable installation system is created in the markets streets, allowing the cleaning and maintenance in ideal conditions of sanitation and hygiene.
Therefore, the design was created with the intention of providing a unitary character throughout the intervention, that is to say, the building configuration, the exterior spaces, the pedestrian access and the interior spaces, integrate a whole which in its basic traces and final structure acquire a great spatial and volumetric character as an unusual building.

Resuming, the intervention responsible for shaping the desired unitary character materialize in:
– Complete rehabilitation of the markets foundry structure making it appropriate for the fulfilment of fire regulation.
– Mezzanine floor demolition.
The building that occupies the central nave of the market has been demolished, due to the strong spatial impact and its partial disuse. The demolition of all suspended ceilings.
-Foundation rehabilitation.
A concrete slab foundation runs throughout the surface of the market, allowing a supporting structure for the market stalls.
-Roof recovery.
The side covers of the market roof has been made with a layer of flat vitrified ceramic tiles, with a colour distribution imitating the existent original. The central nave is covered with laminated glass. The tile and glass supporting structure in the skylight, pairs and straps are resolved through metallic elements.
-Rehabilitation of the glass window.
Reparation and rehabilitation work has been made to the glass mural of the back façade. Equally, all the slat pieces of glass of the four facades of the market are new, thereby facilitating the interior luminosity.
-Facade brick recovery and rehabilitation.
On the building baseboard, a smooth red brick wall has replaced the damaged elements. Equally, the vertical wall of natural stone has been restored and repaired.
-Floor tiling substitution.
The general pavement of the market seeks unity of the whole through a continuous pavement, made out of a multilayer system of epoxy resins.
-Construction of the new stalls.
New market stalls have been made, in response of a correct dimensioning of the same, making them commercially viable.
They have been made with metallic structure and stainless steel panelling. The design has sought to create a stall structure to develop a sequence of colour prisms, establishing a new horizontal construction with a contemporary language making a difference but also dialoguing with the historical structure of the market. This new stall structure unites the whole of the equipment to easily resolve the insertion of refrigerators, counters, shelves, air conditioning systems and mark signs without altering the idea of compositional homogeneity and functional whole.
– Construction of the buried well. The necessity to actualize the market installation to the current technical demands, requires the extension of the existing well, to give service to the new sprinkler installation and fire extinguishers, extending taking advantage of the existing one.
-Conditioning of the arabic tower for technical rooms , offices, janitorial and cleaning employee apparel.
-Ground floor toilet situation, next to the entrance on Sagasta street, thereby facilitating access to all persons with disabilities.
The execution of the works had the expected time of 18 months, which has expanded to 24, dew to the apparition of archaeological rests, that has committed to a campaign excavation and documentation, and to the decision to attend the demands of the merchants in those stall variations that attach to the particular needs of each merchant. We also have expanded the allocations of the processing power and installed a trash compactor on the street level.
