Shop Architecture

We’ve selected what we feel are the key examples of Retail Architecture. We aim to include shop buildings / projects that are either of top quality or interesting, or ideally both.

We cover completed Shopping Center buildings, new building designs and architecture competitions across the world. The focus is on contemporary retail buildings but information on traditional shop buildings is also welcome.

Xtra Herman Miller Shop
Learning from the design processes of the work chairs, which combines formal, structural and material innovation based on the research of Ergonomics to create a surface that moulds comfortably to the human body, our proposal seek to develop a “skin” for the Herman Miller Store that is “moulded” to its host – Xtra. Four central ideas guide our design process. Shop-In-Shop: The Herman Miller store is expressed as a porous plywood envelope forming an independent entity that plugs into the shop space of Xtra. This lightweight envelope allows visual links yet maintains the identity of both stores.

Malaysian Retail Building
Starhill Gallery is perhaps Kuala Lumpur’s most iconic shopping mall, featuring an extraordinary array of luxury shops and fine dining restaurants. Spark’s design proposal dealt with the reinvention of the existing façade of Starhill Gallery facing Bukit Bintang. This reinvention of Starhill Gallery is designed by Stephen Pimbley, founding director of Spark and the architect behind Singapore’s hugely popular Clarke Quay.

Tsvetnoy Central Market
Visible from the ground floor entrance of the department store through a large full-height atrium, the ceiling provides visitors with a glimpse of the colourful produce and activities within the 7m high food hall above. Sitting inside the external envelope, the reflective surfaces wrap and unify the two food retail floors, creating movement through abstract shifting patterns of colour, which make reference to the site‘s history as a flower marketplace as well as the architectural innovation and geometry of the new building, designed by Moscow-based architectural studio Project Meganom.

Zeilgalerie shopping centre
The redesign of the Zeilgalerie shopping centre, which opened in 1992 and is renowned far beyond Frankfurt’s city limits, includes a completely new look for the façade and a full makeover of the public areas inside the complex. Due to the paramount significance of the front of the building in terms of typology and how it fits into the urban setting, 3deluxe’s design concept focuses closely on the architectural surface and its deepening in content, structure and materials.
