The farmhouse is situated on a large rural site in County Down surrounded by a mature garden. Built in the late 1820s, the main house was originally designed with a two storey return that accommodated kitchen and servant spaces.

The Viking Long House – so named for its shape and internal layout – is set within an old apple orchard in a rural location in Ireland. A second lozenge-shaped wall cuts through the house sheltering an entrance courtyard to the North terminating in a sculptural outdoor fireplace to the South.

A journey over water: Constructed entirely on one level for lifetime access, the house and carport are a single composition of eight pavilions connected across the burn by the broad footbridge overlooking the dam, waterfall and burn – sometimes a raging torrent, others a calm trickle.

The project is located in Sligo, perched above Glencar Lake to the south and surrounded by the limestone cliffs and tabletops of Benbulbin Mountain to the north. The existing limestone cottage had a defensive relationship to this dramatic landscape.

The new Leixlip Garda Station replaces a small existing station in the village. The site is on the western side of the village, on higher ground above the Liffey and Rye valleys, and fronts onto the old road to the west, now bypassed by the M4.

This house is in essence a simple bold sculptural form which sits at the foot of a steep escarpment in the Wicklow hills. It is a two storey house with vehicular and pedestrian access from the Bray Road.

St. Patrick’s Cottages, Ireland House Design

Design: ODOSarchitects. The client’s brief simply asked for a new family home with more light and space but they were adamant that they did not want to move from the area. So, a new dwelling was designed to sit at the bottom of their unloved and overgrown back garden.
