The pyramid viewpoint was realised as part of the Scottish Scenic Routes competition, an initiative by the Scottish government with the aim of showcasing young design practices based in Scotland. The original proposal was developed and detailed by BTE according to the specific requirements as defined by the Loch Lomond and The National Park authority, who were responsible for the management and execution of the project on site.

The department of architecture at Strathclyde University has announced that three of its alumni have won the Scottish Scenic Routes Competition to design three ‘architectural interventions’ in Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, reports Urban Realm today.

The first of these is at Lubneig Beag and will be built by Ruaridh Campbell Moir, who graduated in 2013 and now works for EMBT Architects in Barcelona. A second plot at the Falls of Falloch was won by 2012 graduate John Kennedy, now of Rodgers Stirk Harbour + Partners.

Elsewhere a team of three – including 2012 graduate Sean Edwards (with Daniel Bar and Stephane Toussaint) all of whom now work for Dualchas, will work to deliver an intervention at Inveruglas.

Scottish Scenic Routes – new competitions for young architects

The Scottish Scenic Routes project is a new £500k initiative backed by the Scottish Government, Transport Scotland, Visit Scotland, Forestry Commission Scotland, Scottish Natural Heritage, Loch Lomond & the Trossachs National Park Authority, Cairngorms National Park Authority, Scottish Canals and Edinburgh Napier University.

Taking its lead from the National Tourist Routes programme in Norway, the project seeks to involve young architects in the development of a series of interventions along Scotland’s most scenic roads. The first phase of the project will see three sites in the LLTNPA area developed as pilots by March 2014 through architectural competition. It is anticipated that the programme will extend into 2014 and beyond, with further competitions each year aimed at recently qualified young architects and landscape architects and post Part II students with the opportunity to practice and gain the valuable experience currently missing to many because of the economic situation in the construction industry. Previous experience is not required and a mentoring process with a team of consultants has been put in place to ensure delivery of the projects.

The Scottish Scenic Routes project and the first three competitions will be launched on Wednesday 28 August 2013 at Carrochan, the Balloch headquarters of LLTNPA and eligible architects and landscape architects are invited to register to attend at http://scottishscenicroutescompetition.eventbrite.co.uk and to learn more about the project and the sites selected for this stage of the process.

The competition is open to all young architects and landscape architects, individually or in a team, who have gained ARB registration within the last 5 years. It is also open to post Part 2 students. Young practices, with fewer than 10 members, can enter if all the principals have qualified within the last 5 years. Entrants need to be able to carry out the project if selected. LLTNPA is the project sponsor and is managing the contractual process.
