Contemporary house design drawing its simplicity from the precedent of agricultural buildings
Very simple but very elegant and confident response to providing a new home on a tight sight on the country edge of the village. The conceptional approach is carried through to all parts of the design externally, internally – detailing and construction with rigour. A clear and strong award winner which at the end of the day we felt displayed architectural confidence – without arrogance – often a difficult thing to muster!

Renovation and extension of a B listed Ex Ministry of Defence structure on a very prominent site to create a family home. The extension is simply, planned massed and detailed to create rooms which are well proportioned and enjoy the magnificent aspect. The house is detailed in a crisp clean confident way which compliments the architecture of the signal tower. The whole composition manages to appear ‘of a piece’ and the existing structure is not compromised by it conversion.

New housing which eschews standard sub-urban layouts and instead creates shared space between dwellings.
A model for creating places with the layout of high value individual homes. The architecture is restrained but characterful in the context of the understood housing market. The interior spaces are well proportioned and well built and detailed.

Characterful and distinctive new housing which creates a variety of spaces within one scheme. A well handled composition of varying scales and volumes which marks a departure from the late modernist norm which has tended to become the prominent language of new developer apartments within the city.

Spatially exciting and imaginative conversion of existing rural buildings. Clever interventions into what was a really rather non-descript building create a home which is at once architecturally dramatic but at the same time a relaxed, interesting and liveable home. The details and re-interpretation of the dormer window are well executed.

Ingeniously planned and sectionally organised new house on a tight and sensitive New Town site.
Sensitive insertion into an existing mews to provide a new home which exploits the section to the maximum for the accommodation. It is understood that the realisation of this project involved not a little amount of work in the planning process – despite its programme to provide a house in the city – which will be sustainable.

Inventive and practical design in a compact space. Where (Richard’s) the ‘architecture of the mews’ has been developed so that the occupant of the house can feel part of the mews, enjoying space and at the same time a sense of privacy.

Distinctive new housing that creates a new and special space in the city. The simpliciaty of the elevations and the external massing approach were considered highly appropriate for the setting of the church. The external space the housing created and shared was restful and had its own character.

Very much special, Special Needs Housing, which at a townscape level uses an appropriate scale and architectural language – contributing to its location in Girvan; whilst from the perspective of the residents provides spacious and airy accommodation

New apartment block that cleverly exploits its waterside location and makes the most amenity of difficult site levels.
Bold new housing at a relatively density for the site. The elevations of the building enliven the riverside and contribute to the lane whilst the development brings mixed use – in the form of housing to a largely commercial location.

Strong form and massing – well handled – a development which provides dense but attractive housing in the city – however for Saltire the issues of Harbour as a sustainable community are yet to be established in the context of infrastructure and future connection.

Built by Keir Scotland Conversion of a landmark historic building for contemporary housing – which in its self is to be applauded. We felt that terms of grasping the implications of this there was need for the development of shared spaces and non-residential uses in the building.

Saltire Housing Awards

The announcement of the winners of this year’s Saltire Society Housing Design Awards will take place on 7 Nov 2002 at The Lighthouse, Mitchell Lane, Glasgow.
The Saltire Awards will be presented by Dr Elaine Murray, MSP, Deputy Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport and the prize giving will be followed by two lectures and a discussion.
Gordon Benson, Benson & Forsyth Architects, the designers of the Museum of Scotland and Jonathan Woodroffe, S333 Studio in the Netherlands will talk about their work and housing design.
