Rotterdam Architecture Month 2021 Events

On Wednesday evening 2 June at 20:00, Rotterdam Architecture Month 2021 (RA Month) opened with a live talk show from the underground Festival Heart in the City parking garage, directly under Kruisplein. It kicks off a month filled with talks, exhibitions, festivities and tours about architecture, together with the professional world, spatial design education and the public.

Starting on Saturday 5 June, the Festival Heart will be open to the public. Architect Enzo Valerio has designed an intervention there that leads visitors through an immense landscape of concrete rubble. Out of this construction landscape, an exhibition has been built that shows what the city of Rotterdam could look like in the future.

Opening talk show
Entirely in line with the theme ‘Discover the Undercurrent’, RA Month opens with a dialogue initiated by AIR, Architecture Institute Rotterdam, about the space in the city in unexpected places and how the undercurrents and surface currents of the city relate to each other. Various Rotterdam designers, including Patrick Meijers (Orange Architects), Irma van Oord (KCAP), Robert Winkel (Mei architects and planners), Kristian Koreman (ZUS) and Renske van der Stoep (ROFFAA and Rotterdam Academy of Architecture and Urban Design) will discuss this topic. Programme RA Month 2021
Visitors can choose from over 60 different programmes, including the presentation of the Rotterdam Architecture Prize 2021 (RAP): which building will be chosen as this year’s best project in Rotterdam? During the Day of Architecture, visitors are taken through the rich history and the future developments of six area developments by means of guided tours and presentations.

Urban Guides is organizing expeditions to buildings that once participated in previous editions of the Rotterdam Architecture Prize. Architectural knowledge can be tested during the Big Architecture Quiz. It is also possible to take part in a small-scale roof activity or the Rooftop Days TOP^.

Have you always wanted to know what a design bureau looks like? During the last weekend, AIR is organizing an Open Bureau Day together with several design bureaus. Various workshops are being organized in the centre of IJsselmonde, including a photography workshop. Live programmes from the Festival Heart can be followed throughout the month, in both physical and digital form. You can find the up-to-date programme overview at rotterdamarchitectuurmaand.nl.

The Festival Heart
The exhibition in the Festival Heart makes visible how the spatial design sector is working on the city. For the first time, the seven city projects can be seen in seven models. In addition, there are models of the city centre with the most current projects in development and large developments such as ZoHo, Little C, Parkhaven and Codrico.

Het Nieuwe Instituut provides a sneak preview of the major MVRDV exhibition that will take place there this autumn. Students of the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, Eindhoven University of Technology and the Veldacademie put topics such as the energy transition, technologization and justice on the agenda in their plans.

The RA Month festival heart can be visited from Thursdays to Sundays from 5 to 27 June 2021 between 12:00 and 17:00 on the lowest floor of the City parking garage, directly under Kruisplein. The entrance can be found in the pavilion on Kruisplein, opposite restaurant Ayla and the entrance to de Doelen. Visitors are welcome without an appointment and can register online on arrival.

Collaboration

Rotterdam Architecture Month is a joint initiative by AIR, Architecture Institute Rotterdam, Rotterdam Festivals and Rotterdam Partners and is organized in collaboration with various partners, the design sector in Rotterdam and elsewhere, and spatial design education. In 2021, the partners include: OMI, Post-war Reconstruction Community Rotterdam, Rotterdam Rooftop Days, Urban Guides, Independent School for the City, Municipality of Rotterdam, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, Eindhoven University of Technology, Rotterdam Academy of Architecture and Urban Design, Rotterdam Library and many design bureaus.
