In essence, MY college is a secondary school with two wings—but compact and without dead ends. This breathes life into the school and makes this winning design for the new educational building for Onderwijsgroep Galilei so unique. The school building is designed to enable MAVO and VMBO students to discover their talents and skills while fostering a close connection with the community.

International collaboration

The school is the result of an international co-creation between the Dutch firm NEXT architects and the Danish firm Christensen & Co Architects (CCO). This partnership has already proven successful for several other school projects.

“The collaboration between NEXT architects and Christensen & Co fostered creativity and energy among all stakeholders by combining the knowledge and resources of both firms into a sustainable vision and design for MY college,” says Marijn Schenk, architect and partner at NEXT architects. Christensen & Co Architects is an authority on sustainable school design and collaborates with NEXT architects, a firm that places a strong emphasis on a contextual design approach.

In addition to integrating energy neutrality and circularity to meet the highest sustainability standards, MY college is designed as a stimulating and attractive learning environment. “We created a learning environment based on the ‘No Dead Ends’ architectural concept, which is ideal for student interaction. Within the central ‘Learning Loop,’ we define various levels of focus, allowing students to find spaces that match their concentration needs,” explains Mikkel Hermann Sørensen, architect and partner at Christensen & Co Architects.

A stimulating learning environment

The school delivers education based on the Swedish Kunskapsskolan method.

The learning environment at MY college comprises three overarching learning typologies: MY BASE, consisting of theory classrooms and co-creation spaces for large groups; MY SQUARE, offering learning plazas and corridors to foster student interaction; and MY CAVE, providing private study rooms and quiet areas for withdrawal and concentration. Regarding the overall structure, the clear floor plan is essential to the project; it guides students to their classrooms while giving teachers an unobstructed view of the building.

Connection to the outside world: The building features a cohesive layout across all sides, achieved through the use of wooden slats.

MY College was designed with the program and context in mind; for instance, the gymnasium is situated in the tallest volume, serving as a central focal point within the urban landscape.

The building benefits from abundant natural light thanks to its partially open façade. This creates a beautiful connection between the school and the outside world:

students can look beyond the school grounds, while passersby get a glimpse of the activities taking place inside.

In terms of sustainability, the project achieved an ENG (Nearly Zero-Energy Building) rating, realized through measures such as installing rooftop PV panels and employing geometric design strategies that optimize natural light and energy efficiency.

MY COLLEGE IN SPIJKENISSE, SCHOOLGEBOUW OM IN ROND TE DWALEN

Eigenlijk is My college een middelbare school met twee vleugels , maar dan compact en zonder einde. Dat geeft leven aan deze school en maakt dit winnende ontwerp voor het nieuwe onderwijsgebouw van Onderwijsgroep Galilei zo bijzonder. Het schoolgebouw is zo ontworpen dat de mavo- en vmbo leerlingen hun talenten en vaardigheden kunnen ontdekken en een nauwe band met de samenleving hebben.

Internationale samenwerking

De school is een internationale co-creatie tussen het Nederlandse bureau NEXT architects en het Deense bureau Christensen & Co Architects (CCO) uit Denemarken. Een samenwerking die inmiddels voor meerdere schoolgebouwen succesvol is gebleken.

“De samenwerking tussen NEXT architects en Christensen & Co bevorderde de creativiteit en energie van alle stakeholders door de kennis en middelen van beide kantoren samen te brengen in een duurzame visie en ontwerp voor MY college.” vertelt Marijn Schenk, architect en partner van NEXT architects. Christensen & Co. Architects is een autoriteit in het ontwerpen van duurzame scholen en werkt samen met NEXT architects die sterk insteekt op de contextuele ontwerpbenadering. Naast de integratie van energieneutraliteit en circulariteit om aan de hoogste duurzaamheidsnormen te voldoen, is MY college ook ontworpen als een stimulerende en aantrekkelijke leeromgeving.

“We hebben een leeromgeving gecreëerd op basis van het architectonische concept van No Dead Ends, dat ideaal is voor interactie tussen leerlingen. In de centrale Learning Loop definiëren we verschillende focusniveaus, zodat leerlingen ruimtes kunnen vinden die overeenkomen met hun concentratievereisten. ” aldus Mikkel Hermann Sørensen, architect en partner van Christensen & Co Architects.

Een stimulerende leeromgeving

De school biedt onderwijs aan volgens de Zweedse Kunskapsskolan methode. De leeromgeving van MY college bevat drie overkoepelende typologieën om te leren: MY BASE, bestaande uit theorielokalen en co-creatie van oefenruimtes voor grote groepen, MY SQUARE biedt leerpleinen en gangen om interactie tussen leerlingen te bevorderen, en MY CAVE biedt privéstudiekamers en rustige plekken voor de mogelijkheid tot terugtrekken en concentratie. In de algemene structuur is de duidelijke plattegrond essentieel voor dit project, het leidt de studenten naar de klaslokalen en geeft de docenten een onbelemmerd overzicht over het gebouw.

Verbinding met de wereld buiten Het gebouw heeft aan alle kanten een samenhangende indeling door gebruik te maken van de houten lamellen. MY college is ontworpen met oog voor het programma en de context, zo is de gymnastiekzaal in het hoogste volume geplaatst en biedt een centraal brandpunt in het stedelijk landschap.

Er is veel daglicht in het gebouw door de deels open gevel. Dit geeft een mooie verbinding tussen school en de buitenwereld: leerlingen kijken verder dan de school, en passanten krijgen een kijkje in wat er op school gebeurt.

Wat betreft duurzaamheid is de ENG-score behaald, door onder andere pv-panelen op het dak te plaatsen en de juiste geometrische toepassing te kiezen voor daglichtgebruik en energiebesparing.
