In the heart of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park, the need emerged to breathe new life into two pre-existing buildings, reshaping them to welcome the TerraSense Mountain Charm Retreat, a rural tourism and hotel experience.
Embraced as a life’s calling by the hotel’s owners, the project sought to marry a pursuit of exceptional spatial quality with the raw, untouched beauty of its surroundings — a place marked by silence, solitude, and the strict regulations that come with being in a zone of highest environmental protection.
Thus was born the guiding idea: a contemporary reimagining of the traditional mountain house. Preserving the soul of the original structures, rebuilt in schist — the emblematic stone of the region — the design introduces a new architectural language. With restraint and precision, it uses the fewest possible materials, articulating a single, deliberate gesture that clearly marks the moment of this new intervention, while honoring the layers of time embedded in the place.
Inside, the spaces still carry echoes of the former houses, yet they are transformed — redefined by new relationships, unexpected transitions, and a refined spatial choreography. Each hotel accommodation unit, whether in the main house or the separate villa, is conceived as a unique world, offering its own intimate way of inhabiting the landscape.
Paradoxically, the challenges posed by the site and its protected status became the project’s greatest allies. The resulting volumes, grounded in tradition through the use of schist, gain a sense of contemporaneity through bold cantilevered additions in exposed concrete. These gestures open wide the architecture to the surrounding mountains — framing views, inviting in light, scent, and sound — and allowing the interiors to be fully immersed in the natural rhythm of this extraordinary place.
A space not just to stay, but a hotel retreat to dwell in quiet contemplation and deep, unhurried enjoyment.

No coração do Parque Natural da Serra da Estrela, entre o silêncio mineral das montanhas e a vastidão de um céu que respira devagar, ergue-se o desejo de devolver alma a dois edifícios esquecidos — reconstituí-los não como ruínas resgatadas, mas como lugares vivos, preparados para acolher o TerraSense Mountain Charm Retreat, um projecto de agro-turismo e hotelaria enraizado no tempo e na terra.
Sonhado como projecto de vida pela Proprietária do hotel, este gesto arquitectónico procura conciliar a exigência de uma elevada qualidade espacial com a envolvência singular da paisagem — um lugar de silêncio profundo, de isolamento genuíno, e simultaneamente, de rigorosas condicionantes legais por que o resguardam quase como um santuário.
É neste equilíbrio delicado entre aspiração e território que surge o conceito orientador de todo o projecto: a reinterpretação da casa de montanha. Não se trata de imitar o passado, mas de o escutar. Respeitando a matriz original dos edifícios, reconstruídos em xisto — a pedra ancestral da região — procurou-se introduzir uma linguagem contemporânea, contida e intencional. Com um gesto único e depurado, que assume o tempo presente, afirmando-se como uma intervenção silenciosa da sua época, sem apagar a memória construída.
Os espaços interiores mantêm subtis ressonâncias das casas originais, mas reinventam-se através das novas relações e intersecções espaciais que os atravessam entre volumes, luzes e percursos. Assim, definem-se diferentes unidades de alojamento do hotel, emergindo como mundos próprios, cada uma distinta, com carácter e identidade próprios, oferecendo a quem as habita uma experiência exclusiva e íntima, quer nas áreas do edifício principal, quer seja na villa que se desenha à parte, mas em consonância.
As dificuldades inerentes ao local e às exigências da sua protecção transformaram-se em oportunidade criativa. O resultado são volumes que, ancorados na tradição através do uso do xisto, se projectam no presente com extensões em betão aparente, suspensas e afirmativas que flutuam e se projetam na paisagem. Estes corpos abrem-se generosamente à montanha, rasgam vistas, deixam entrar a luz, os cheiros e os sons — permitindo uma ocupação sensorial, plena e tranquila do espaço. Um lugar onde se habita o tempo com serenidade, e onde a natureza é presença contínua e essencial.
Mais do que alojamento, este é um hotel de permanência e contemplação, onde a arquitectura não se impõe, mas escuta, interpreta e amplifica a presença da montanha.
