In his annual State of the State address, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo reaffirmed his commitment to a large-scale renovation of Manhattan’s Pennsylvania Station. He seems to be pushing for a larger redevelopment than currently planned.

Calling the current underground facility the “seven levels of catacombs”, Cuomo implied the state could use eminent domain to take control of Madison Square Garden (MSG) and other nearby buildings, replacing them with a new terminal that would recapture the glory of now-demolished 1910 masterpiece. MSG’s lease expires in 2023: the City Council has ordered it to find a new location thereafter. Preservation groups, including Rebuild Penn Station, praised the governor for his grander vision.
The original building built in 1910 was inspired by the Gare d’Orsay in Paris, and considered a masterpiece of the Beaux-Arts style. The ornate granite-and-marble building was demolished in 1963. It was designed by McKim, Mead & White, the American architectural firm prominent in Manhattan at the turn of the twentieth century.
The current work includes the renovation of the Beaux-Arts James Farley Post Office, a landmarked building across the street behind Madison Square Garden. Architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill are converting it into a train hall to ease congestion underground.
Pennsylvania Station is located entirely underground, beneath Madison Square Garden. It has 21 tracks fed by seven tunnels.
This NYC station is the busiest rail hub in North America with around 650,000 passengers daily.

This spring, the 650,000 commuters who travel through Penn Station daily may finally start to witness Governor Cuomo’s $1.6 billion plan to revamp what he called the “overcrowded, decrepit and claustrophobic” station into a more spacious and high-tech transit hub.
This Manhattan transport hub is the busiest passenger transportation facility in the Western Hemisphere.
The first phase of the overall Moynihan Station Development Project will begin soon, extending Penn Station’s West End Concourse to reduce congestion, reports the Daily News. The second phase will transform the James A.
The governor’s Train Hall plan is expected to cost $1.6 billion, with $600 million coming from the developer of the hall’s retail space, about $570 million from the Empire State Development Corporation, and $425 million from Amtrak, LIRR, the Port Authority and the federal government. The hall’s scheduled completion date is in 2020.
Farley Post Office into the new Moynihan Train Hall, which will hold more than 112,000 square feet of retail and 588,000 square feet of office space, in addition to new ticketing and waiting areas for Amtrak and Long Island Railroad passengers.
The first phase of the Moynihan Station project should have been completed in 2016, but the project’s opening day was delayed due to redesigns in the original plan to include digital media screens to help commuters navigate the station. The expansion of the West Concourse will cover eight more tracks at Penn Station, allowing commuters to reach the street quicker.

SOM Reveals Vision for New Penn Station
SOM revealed its plan for a “re-conceptualized Penn Station and Madison Square Garden. This vision plan is the result of a design challenge, issued by the Municipal Art Society of New York (MAS), to re-imagine Penn Station – the busiest train station in North America – and the Garden, which sits directly on top of the station.
SOM was invited to contribute because of its long history of working in Manhattan, its wide-ranging expertise on extraordinarily complicated sites, and its renown as a progressive design firm; SOM also presented its vision for the future of Grand Central station, another MAS initiative, last year.
SOM’s vision plan dramatically expands the transit capacity at Penn Station to create a capstone to every major piece of transportation infrastructure serving New York City. The plan calls for the expansion of Penn Station’s footprint by two additional blocks to accommodate high-speed rail lines for the Northeast Corridor, expanded commuter rail service for the entire tri-state area, and direct rail connections to JFK, LaGuardia and Newark Airports.”
