(New York, NY – June 2012) Hansgrohe and its designer brand Axor are proud to sponsor the AIA New Practices New York Competition and recognize talented new firms for their unique and innovative strategies. The 2012 competition awarded seven promising New York-based architecture and design firms with the biennial prize. In addition to the New Practices New York 2012 Exhibition at the Center for Architecture (on display from June 14-September 8, 2012), each will have an opportunity to present and display their work at Axor NYC, Axor’s design studio located in the Meatpacking District.

“By supporting the newest voices in the profession, it is our desire to be part of the larger conversation of architecture and design and be a valuable partner in contributing to their work,” adds Michael Reiman, Hansgrohe/Axor international projects consultant – Northeast. From June 2012 through January 2013, Axor NYC will give each firm its time in the spotlight. The program kicks off on June 28 with a presentation by formlessfinder, followed by cocktails. The series will start back up again in September with SLO Architecture and follow the same structure. Throughout the fall and winter, guests will have the opportunity to hear from Holler architecture, ABRUZZO BODZIAK ARCHITECTS, Christian Wassmann and The Living. In addition to a presentation, winners will also have the opportunity to showcase their work. Axor NYC has dedicated a portion of the design studio to be used for the installation. Each exhibit will be on display one week prior to their respective seminar and remain for three weeks.

Thursday, Jun 28 from 6-8pm: formlessfinder
formlessfinder is an experimental laboratory that aims to introduce formlessness into architecture through the production of architectural models, drawings, videos, photography, structural and material tests, writings, and interviews. fomlessfinder is an ongoing collaboration between Princeton graduates, Garrett Ricciardi and Julian Rose.

Thursday, Sep 27 from 6-8pm: SLO Architecture
SLO Architecture was founded in Madrid, Spain by native New Yorkers Alexander Levi and Amanda Schachter and has been based in New York since 2007. They have been involved in numerous projects throughout the US and Europe. Their project, Harvest Dome, will be featured at the US Pavilion of the Venice Biennale later this year.

Tuesday, Oct 16

from 6-8pm: HOLLER architecture
Led by Tobias Holler, Brooklyn-based HOLLER is a research and design practice investigating the relationships between architecture, urbanism, landscape, and technology. The firm also places emphasis on sustainability, collaboration, and social media. HOLLER Architecture has designed a single-family home that meets the strict German Passivhaus standards. It is set to be constructed on Long Island in 2013.

Thursday, Nov 15 from 6-8pm: ABRUZZO BODZIAK ARCHITECTS
Emily Abruzzo and Gerald Bodziak met as graduate students at Princeton University and have collaborated on projects, writing, modeling making, and furniture prototypes before starting their firm in 2009. Recent projects include “Sanctuary Along the Coast” in Japan and a Pop-Up Farm in Brooklyn, NY for desigNYC.

Thursday, Dec 13 from 6-8pm: Christian Wassmann
Christian Wassmann is an international architecture firm, founded in Switzerland, with a passion for art, music, geometry and urban life. Wassman and his team create installations and exhibitions, as well as furniture, interiors and architecture. He was a recent recipient of the world renowned Swiss Art Award for his design for the East Village Radio station.

January TBD: The Living
The Living is an architecture firm founded by David Benjamin and Soo-in Yang. The firm brings collaboration, open source design and synthetic biology to architecture. One of their latest projects, Amphibious Architecture, was a floating installation of light over the East River that changed color according to the condition of life below water.

New Practices New York Design Competition

Best and Brightest Emerging Design Talent Featured at Center for Architecture Winners of prestigious design competition display their unique projects and commendable methods for practice in the annual New Practices New York exhibition – opening September 5th in New York City.

NEW YORK, August 12, 2008 – With its second biennial portfolio competition and exhibition, the New Practices Committee of the AIA New York Chapter has recognized six promising and innovative new architecture firms. Opening on September 5, 2008, the exhibition New Practices New York presents the work of the competition winners, and includes a symposium that features the novel ways in which these New York City firms organize their architectural practices. In order to qualify for the competition, practices must have been founded after 2002 and be located within the five boroughs.

The firm Urban A&O was the Highest Honor recipient for the design of the main entrance to the Johnson & Johnson Olympic Games Pavilion, Beijing.

Vitality and vision
A distinguished panel of jurors, including four New York architects, selected the competition’s winners out of 52 submitted portfolios, noting their exceptional qualities and forward-looking vision. Jury members were: Amale Andraos (Work AC), Jennifer Carpenter (TRUCK), Peter Eisenman, FAIA (Eisenman Architects), William Menking (The Architect’s Newspaper) and Charles Renfro, AIA (Diller Scofidio + Renfro).

“The six winning firms, while diverse in their approaches to both the work they showed and the portfolios they presented, all shared a consistent ability to produce architecture that expressed their interests, attitudes, and research,” said Matt Bremer, AIA, co-chair of the AIA New York Chapter’s New Practices Committee, which organized the competition and exhibition.
“Our committee was encouraged by the breadth of opportunity that technology, economic vitality, and public interest in architecture have offered the fresh talent in our city,” Bremer continued. Noting the Committee’s particular interest in firm operations, Bremer Baumann Architecture, an award winner, designed this sculpture studio façade in Brooklyn added that the award winners stood out for their abilities to design and execute their groundbreaking projects.
“What distinguishes this award from other Architecture competitions is our focus on methods of collaboration and integrated practice,” explained Committee co-chair Marc Clemenceau Bailey, AIA. “We wanted to know how their work methods differed from more traditional practices, and how they applied these approaches to critical thought, design, and construction on local and global levels.”

Firm portraits – and large-scale installations

This year’s exhibit on the New Practices winners, designed by WSDIA | WeShouldDoItAll & Corey Yurkovich, features two exciting new elements; portraits of the winning firms by the photographers Mastromatteo + Steen, and large-scale installations designed by each honoree. The installations, which will fill the double-height storefront of the Center, present an opportunity for each firm to make a statement about how their innovative practices translate to innovative work. Each firm will also create a short video and booklet describing their practice.

2008 Winners The New Practices New York, 2008 contest winners are: Urban A&O, which earned the highest honor (urbanao.com); Baumann Architecture (philippebaumann.com); Common Room (common-room.net); David Wallance Architect (dw-arch.com); Matter Practice (matterpractice.net); and Openshop Studio (openshopstudio.com).

EXHIBITION ON VIEW The exhibition will remain on view from September 5, 2008, through January 3, 2009, at the Center for Architecture, located at 536 LaGuardia Place, in New York City.

SYMPOSIUM New Practices New York 2008: Winners’ Symposium
Wednesday, October 15, 2008, at 6:00–8:00pm (RSVP required) – The winners of the New Practices New York 2008 Competition present their work and discuss how they organize their architectural practices.

New Practices New York 2008 is hosted by the AIA New Practices Committee and also underwritten by Häfele. Lead sponsors are MG & Company, Poliform USA, as well as Thornton Tomasetti.
