Approach for transformation of building to public space for a modern culture is founded, first of all, on understanding of historical value of this building. Building built in 1904 is now chocked up by annexes, and lost the primary look. A project is returned in building by former sense of space, pranging all new partitions and dismantling an old industrial equipment, but leaving historical elements here, saving memory about a place.

The idea of transformation of former power-station in the center of multimedia art implies maintenance of building as shells and introduction in his space of new volume that delicately will unite with existent space. A construction is presented by a few rectangular containers and divided by three levels. Halls into containers plug in itself temporal mobile installations, in that can be contained text, graphic and video information, and also, possibility of the interactive co-operating with her.

Internal space of center is projected as a sequence " of black" (dark) and " white" (well lighted up) spaces, where greater part of works is kept into rooms (in fact, boxing) that is set into an existent interior. This approach also serves a purpose of the delicate including new in old.A visitor passes through the enfilade of light and dark halls, where multimedia installations are into an architectural shell.

The project started in February 2017 and finished in June 2017 in Moscow, and was represented at the British Higher School of Art and Design in June 2017.

Were selected materials, that would combine with existing structural elements of building – light-emitting-diode tubes of different size, concrete and thin folias of black metal.New concrete floor does not touch walls and saves polite distance from the historical elements of building. On two facades of central container there are holes and in these places a sheet-metal is bended as a petal.Such reception creates feeling of relief on the surface of boxing. These holes get on the third level of container (atrium) and give an opportunity to the visitors to consider majestic industrial building from every quarter.

Building was built as power-station for the energy supply of tram-lines. In the process of exploitation of building the numerous reconstructions related to the division of internal space and change of his functional setting were conducted. The outward and internal walls of building in the level of above-ground floors are executed from laying of ceramic brick. For leaning of beams and constructions of coverage pilasters are envisaged in walls.

Measurement works and inspection of the technical condition of building structures of the building were conducted for determination of possibility of realization of reconstruction.Facades were executed on results an executive survey by a geodesic equipment. Also conducted research of load carrying structures of building-farms,columns and beams of framework. On the basis of the were collected data the calculations of metallic and reinforce-concrete columns, outward and internal walls, constructions of ceiling are conducted.Tests on stretching were conducted according to the requirements of GOST 1497-84 on the testing machine of EU 40.

When working on a design it was needed to settle a conflict between difficult, massive historical architecture and new independent architectural volume. There was a necessity equip and complicate monotonous transit space of power-station and not overload it.The solution was to design the exposition space as an insert. This technique was chosen to step back, build an absolutely independent space that does not conflict with the historical architecture. On a visual level, the new object manifests anonymity at the expense monolithic solutions the outer shell.

Mariia Lipina Interview

Interview with Mariia Lipina at Saturday 21st of April 2018 Regarding Ges 2 Center for Multimedia Arts

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
ML: A basic architectural idea consisted in that, to add to existent building a structure that would be used for the different types of public activity, such as lectures, shows of films, activity of youth groups. Along with maintenance of historical memory.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
ML: Approach for transformation of building to public space for a modern culture is founded, first of all, on understanding of historical value of this building. Building built in 1904 is now chocked up by annexes, and lost the primary look. A project is returned in building by former sense of space, pranging all new partitions and dismantling an old industrial equipment, but leaving historical elements here, saving memory about a place.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
ML: Six months.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
ML: This project was created as a diploma project and was presented at British Higher School of Art and Design in June, 2017.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
ML: Ges 2 is the project of maintenance, but not new architecture. Two conditions, that usually are separately from each other, offer the ensemble of fragments that will not allow some part to prevail above other. The different floors of building create space for the changing set of designer laboratories and exhibitions. His overhead floor offers multifunction space for events, that can be divided in number of different ways by means of turning panels. From here, besides museum galleries, Ges 2 also offers apartments for realization of conferences, events, seminars and educating.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
ML: This existent name of building of former power-station, for that a project was created.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
ML: The making elements of museum become "space without borders", where visitors are perceived as participants, but not audience. They open the world and place in it by means of collaboration, participation and debates.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
