Tucked into the ground floor of a historic limestone building on Rue Bernard, Dalmata is a gelato shop with a clear sense of joy and no shortage of personality. The project, a collaboration between MRDK and artist Dan Climan, occupies a narrow, elongated footprint that became a creative opportunity rather than a limitation.

The design draws on the visual language of the classic Italian gelateria, reinterpreted through a bold, graphic lens with a nod to the meticulous, storybook world of Wes Anderson. Two primary colours anchor the interior: a saturated burnt orange wrapping the upper walls from street to back, and a desaturated pink below, applied to classical panel-moulded wainscoting. The pairing is warm and confident, retro without being nostalgic, refined without taking itself too seriously.

A brown-and-white striped awning on the exterior establishes the shop’s character before you’ve even crossed the threshold. That same striped fabric reappears inside as a secondary awning suspended from the ceiling, running the full length of the counter and dissolving the boundary between street and interior in the most literal, and most charming, way possible. Underfoot, black-and-white mosaic tile adds another layer of old-world reference.

The veined marble service counter, branded in carved lettering, anchors the space. Amber globe pendants cast a warm cinematic glow. On the orange wall, a framed painting of horses by Dan Climan gives the room its soul. Nearby, a small photograph of Oasis mid-scream offers both a wink and a thesis statement: I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream.

Outside, folding benches and a blue letter-board menu complete the tableau. Unpretentious, precise, and genuinely fun. Dalmata is a small space that knows exactly what it wants to be.

Niché au rez-de-chaussée d’un immeuble historique en pierre calcaire sur la rue Bernard, Dalmata est une gelateria animée d’une joie évidente et d’une forte personnalité. Le projet, une collaboration entre MRDK et l’artiste Dan Climan, occupe une empreinte étroite et allongée qui est devenue une opportunité créative plutôt qu’une contrainte.

Le design s’inspire du langage visuel de la gelateria italienne classique, réinterprété à travers une approche graphique audacieuse, avec un clin d’œil à l’univers minutieux et narratif de Wes Anderson. Deux couleurs principales structurent l’intérieur : un orange brûlé saturé enveloppe les murs supérieurs de la rue jusqu’au fond, tandis qu’un rose désaturé habille la partie inférieure, appliqué sur un lambris mouluré classique. L’ensemble est chaleureux et affirmé, rétro sans être nostalgique, raffiné sans se prendre trop au sérieux.

À l’extérieur, un auvent rayé brun et blanc affirme le caractère du lieu avant même de franchir le seuil. Ce même tissu rayé réapparaît à l’intérieur sous forme d’un auvent secondaire suspendu au plafond, courant sur toute la longueur du comptoir et brouillant, de la manière la plus littérale et la plus charmante, la frontière entre la rue et l’intérieur. Au sol, une mosaïque noir et blanc ajoute une autre couche de référence au passé.

Le comptoir de service en marbre veiné, orné d’un lettrage gravé, ancre l’espace. Des suspensions globe ambrées diffusent une lumière chaude et cinématographique. Sur le mur orange, un tableau de chevaux signé Dan Climan donne son âme à la pièce. À proximité, une petite photographie d’Oasis en plein cri offre à la fois un clin d’œil et une déclaration d’intention : I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream.

À l’extérieur, des bancs pliants et un menu sur panneau à lettres bleu complètent le tableau. Sans prétention, précis et véritablement ludique, Dalmata est un petit espace qui sait faire une entrée remarquée.
