La Trobe University Arrival Cafe
Arrival Cafe
A semi permanent and relocatable pod, this Café is intended to activate the landscaped plaza and the frontage of the existing Thomas Cherry building, the public transport gateway of the University. It follows Latrobe’s masterplan intention to activate and provide greater student amenity with small scale intervention.
The café opens inwards and outwards to provide service to the plaza and to the student study spaces inside the building. It is a simple form for transportability and is clad in brass and timber to give a warm and durable appearance. The brass finishes and simple closed form complement the brut concrete of the existing building.
Therapy
This indoor tenancy refurbishment provides an inviting social place for students to study and meet. A snack food tenancy is located here along with food heating facilities, and a service window to the adjoining café.
Seating is deliberately varied to cater for large and small student groups. Timber screening, concrete blocks, planting and wall murals are used to define spaces and provide separation between quiet and busy zones. Attention has been paid to the detailed finishes to create a warm and friendly environment, which despite being almost devoid of natural light, has proved very successful and appreciated by the Latrobe students.
Food Truck Village
Still in development, this addition will provide a festive environment that can be enjoyed in the warmer months.
