Craftsmen and craft beer: Pub hand-built by local people at NOMA in Manchester

The Pilcrow Pub

The Pilcrow, a pub built by hundreds of local volunteers, has welcomed its first customers in NOMA, an emerging neighbourhood in the centre of Manchester.

The pub welcomed volunteers and lead craftsmen on Friday 23 September, before opening to the public for the first time.

The Pilcrow is a creative community engagement project conceived by NOMA, a 20 acre neighbourhood opposite Manchester Victoria. The aim of the project has been to engage locals, help teach new skills and create something tangible that everyone could have a stake in.

Weekly workshops brought craftsmen together with volunteers to make everything from bar stools to beer taps, to woven hanging baskets and tables, all of which have been pieced together to create the pub.

The Pilcrow is located in Sadler’s Yard, a new public square in heart of NOMA which extends the city’s creative Northern Quarter.

Craft beers are being provided by local brewery Cloudwater Brew Co and the pub will be operated by All Our Yesterdays, a local bar operator, ensuring The Pilcrow can become a destination pub for the entire neighbourhood to enjoy.

NOMA is being developed by The Co-op and Hermes Investment Management.

Ed Sellick, Asset Manager at Hermes Investment Management, said:
“A major priority is to engage those living and working in the area. The Pilcrow highlights the importance of community and has allowed local people in Manchester to shape a real sense of place at Sadler’s Yard. The city has a thriving and diverse community and NOMA is fast-emerging as a great location for people to work, live and relax.”

Nicky Moore, brand manager at NOMA, said:
“Our ambition was to create a project that connected with people while also having a clear sense of purpose. As well as the obvious benefits of having a great local pub, we wanted to help people remember the value in craftsmanship and collaboration which are fundamental to any successful place.”

Ben Young, director at OH OK LTD, added:
“The Pilcrow hasn’t been quick and it hasn’t been easy, but it’s great to see the community of people involved come together and celebrate the end of the project with a drink in the pub that they created.”
