Salford House 4 Life Competition – Winner Announced

White Arkitekter was announced as Competition Winners during a Private View held at the CUBE Gallery in Manchester last night. White teamed up with Great Places Housing Group, Northerngroup, Stockleys, AECOM and Gardiner & Theobald to form a consortia to work on the project to design the Greengate area of Salford. This 1.45ha brownfield site will be developed to form a new exemplar of family housing combining innovation and sustainability which responds to the anticipated lifestyle and health needs of a future community and is capable of accommodating changing housing needs over a lifetime.

Catherine Burd, RIBA Adviser said “The judges were all extremely impressed by all three shortlisted entries. In the end, the clarity of White’s landscape-led approach emerged as a clear winner. The scheme, which builds on a Scandinavian model of family apartments and flexible tenancies, provides all households with views and access to a range of imaginatively landscaped private and shared garden spaces, within a simple and robust urban footprint.”

Keith Boxer, Director Innovation and Sustainability, White Arkitekter commented “We are delighted to bring White’s innovative Scandinavian approach to the design of a new model for family housing in the heart of this great city. As architects we have a crucial role in developing the sustainable environment of the future; the Salford House 4 Life competition is an important step in making that vision a reality.”

John Merry CBE, Leader of Salford City Council, said: “This housing will be different to anything we have seen in Salford before. It will be exciting to watch the scheme take shape over the coming months and years, bringing innovative and sustainable housing into the city for our residents to enjoy.”

Shortlist Announced

Location: Salford, north west England

A shortlist of three teams has now been selected in the competition to design a visionary family housing scheme on a 1.45 ha brownfield site in the heart of the Greengate area of Salford across from Manchester City Centre.

Launched last year by RIBA Competitions on behalf of Central Salford URC, Salford City Council, Centre for Construction Innovation Northwest (CCINW), British Research Establishment, Salford University and NHS Salford, the competition invited architects to come up with designs for a development combining innovation and sustainability and respond to existing and anticipated lifestyle, health and educational needs of the community.

Since the competition was launched Central Salford URC has reluctantly been wound up, although Salford City Council is committed to taking the work they started forward and continuing to regenerate this part of the city.

Fifty nine entries were received at stage one of the competition and ten schemes were subsequently longlisted for interview. Following interviews the jury panel identified three teams to proceed through to the second stage design phase of the competition.
