Web Structures wins Kuala Lumpur office tower contract

International engineering consultancy Web Structures has been appointed to work on a RM170 million office tower development in Kuala Lumpur being created by top architect Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF).

The 30-storey building, fronting Jalan Sultan Ismail, will be the first building in Malaysia created by New York firm KPF and is Web Structures’ 12th high rise project in the city.

The “green” building, close to the iconic Petronas Towers, is destined to be the Malaysian headquarters of leading property and real estate group Mulpha Properties.

Mulpha Properties is a major real estate investor and developer. It owns a number of assets in Australia and is involved in property development in the Far East.

Web Structures, which has offices in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai and London, will bring its global design engineering skills tand local knowledge to the development, which will also have around 270,000sq ft of office space available and five basement-parking levels.

The civil, structural and geotechnical engineering consultancy is a pioneer of “Fusion Engineering” – using cost efficiencies to redefine engineering excellence through true innovation and design – enabling groundbreaking architecture to become building reality.

Web Structures adds the skyscraper to its prestigious project list, including New York’s Freedom Tower, and will use its strong track record in Malaysia to help create KPF’s stylish tower design.

Other current Web Structures project partners include Foster & Partners, Zaha Hadid Architects, Conran & Partners, Sir Terence Conran’s architecture and design practice and Adjaye Associates.

Web Structures group director Dr Hossein Rezai Jorabi said: “We are extremely pleased to have been invited to take part in this project, which is our first collaboration with KPF.

“It is the latest in a number of major building projects in Kuala Lumpur that we have been involved in and we will be using our local knowledge to deliver engineering solutions to help make this another landmark building in the city.

“KPF has a fantastic reputation for designing truly original buildings across the world, including The Pinnacle in the UK and the Shanghai World Financial Centre.

“We are delighted to have the opportunity to work with their design team on this project, their first in Malaysia.

“And we believe we can make a telling contribution to the successful delivery of the building.”

Web Structures’ high-quality design engineering places the practice and its talented team of professionals in the “Premier League” of international engineers, demonstrating an in-depth knowledge that continues to stretch the boundaries of existing engineering work practices.

Since its creation, Web Structures has worked on more than 280 projects in more than 22 countries, continually building on its reputation in the industry.

Its awards include a 2008 “Construction Excellence Award” from the Building and Construction Authority of Singapore for its work on the high-profile Baywater Development.

It was also commissioned to work on the tallest building ever built in Mauritius – helping design a 141m tall tower in cyclonic wind speeds of up to 77 metres.

Web Structures’ current projects include a new Hilton Hotel in Mongolia; Kuala Lumpur’s landmark, luxury residential development Troika; the upmarket Capella Resort in Singapore and the Kempinski Arusha Hotel in Tanzania.
